CORVALLIS, Ore. – Amanda Brown led the Oregon State volleyball team but the Beavers dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Utah Friday night in front of 1,253 at Gill Coliseum.
Set scores were 22-25, 25-23, 16-25 and 14-25.
The match served as the team's annual “Spike Out Cancer” night and a majority of the fans in attendance were decked out in pink shirts emblazoned with “Dam Cancer.” A portion of the proceeds from the sales of the shirts are destined to the Corvallis Clinic and Project H.E.R. to help find a cure for breast cancer.
The Beavers and Utes gave those in attendance a great show, with Utah edging the Beavers on the strength of 15 blocks to OSU's four. Oregon State led in kills, 54 to 48, digs, 64 to 50, and assists, 48-40. But Oregon State also committed 35 attack errors to just 15 for Utah.
OSU (9-9 overall, 0-7 Pac-12 Conference) hit .123 to the Utes' (15-4, 4-3) .250.
“We came back to win in the second set and then in the third set, we just had a sluggish start,” Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We couldn't sustain anything. We have to work better at siding out.”
Brown finished with a .321 hitting percentage after collecting her team-best 14 kills in 28 attempts, committing five errors along the way. Laura Schaudt was close behind with 12 kills while Arica Nassar tallied 11 of her own.
Chelsey Schofield was tops in kills for Utah, posting 11.
Utah won the first set, 25-22, and hit .176 compared to .114 for the Beavers. The lead changed hands twice during the set.
The Beavers took set two, 25-23, on the strength of hitting .286 to Utah's .175. The score changed hands six times and the teams were tied 14 times, but it was the Beavers who scored the final two points of the frame.
Utah led from the get go in a 25-16 third-set victory and the Utes jumped out to an 18-8 advantage in set four before taking the match with a 25-14 win.
Oregon State stays home Sunday for an 11 a.m. PT match against Colorado that will also air on the Pac-12 Networks. Tickets for the match can be purchased online at beavertickets.com or in person Sunday at Gill Coliseum.
