CORVALLIS, Ore. – Laura Schaudt led the Oregon State volleyball team with 10 digs as the Beavers dropped a three-set decision to No. 1 USC Friday night at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 11-25, 15-25 and 15-25.
“That is a very good team,” Oregon State head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We really got into trouble with (Samantha) Bricio's serving; she had six aces, which is pretty good in any circle. We conversely didn't put much pressure on them.
“We're in a tough spot; we've had some injuries and we need to have some players step up to the plate. Tonight was a rite of passage for Carlotta (Oggioni).”
Schaudt recorded her 10 kills on 22 attempts, and ended the night with a .364 hitting percentage. She was backed by Arica Nassar, who had six kills to go along with four blocks, including one solo.
Bricio paced USC offensively, recording a team-leading 10 kills to go along with her six service aces, which were the only ones by either team.
The Beavers finished the night at a .065 hitting percentage while USC finished at a .290 clip.
The teams were equal defensively, with the Beavers recording 35 digs to USC's 37. Darby Reeder and Lila Toner tied for the team lead with seven apiece, marking just the second time this season libero Becky Defoe has not led the Beavers.
OSU also had six blocks to USC's 10. Hannah Schraer led USC with six, all assisted.
USC won the first set by hitting .226 to the Beavers' minus-.029, and never relinquished the lead. The Beavers held the lead once, and matched USC four times, in set two but were not able to hold the momentum in the Trojans' 25-15 victory.
Set three was similar; the Beavers saw the lead five times but could not hold on in the 25-15 USC win.
Oregon State remains at home for a match with 23rd-ranked UCLA Saturday night at Gill Coliseum. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. PT. Tickets can be purchased by visiting BeaverTickets.com or in person at the Gill Coliseum ticket office.
The match will not air on the Pac-12 Networks; however, a free live stream will be available on osubeavers.com.
