Telles Posts Near-Record Score, Beavs Finish Fourth At Home Tourney

Oregon State Invitational - Final Results 
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Seshia Telles shot the second-best three-round score in school history and the Beavers moved up a spot to finish in fourth place at the 16-team Oregon State Invitational that concluded Tuesday at Trysting Tree Golf Club.
Telles finished in a tie for third place with a 2-under 72-72-70--214, just one stroke off the Oregon State record of 3-under 213 that was set in 1998 by Kathleen Takaishi at the Wahine Classic in Oahu, Hawai'i. The junior from Tualatin, Ore., was flawless in Tuesday's final round, firing a bogey-free 70 that included birdies on the par-3 seventh and par-4 eighth holes and 16 pars.
"It went very well today," Telles said. "I was striking the ball the best I have ever hit it with my irons. I felt like I could have done better, but I always feel that way. Overall, I think today went really well. The difference between the two rounds yesterday and the one round today was more in my head. I was going out there and not being fully into one shot. If I messed up a shot, I didn't let it get me down today."
The Beavers finished the two-day, 54-hole event with a 33-over 294-303-300--897 at the par-72, 6,141-yard Trysting Tree Golf Club, their eighth-best three round team score in school history. Oregon State was fifth after 36 holes of play on Monday and held off San Francisco by a stroke to finish fourth in its first tournament of the 2012-13 season.

"We played very well for the first 13 holes today and then the wheels fell off for a bit," Oregon State head coach Risë Alexander said. "So we ended up fourth instead of third. Working on our mental game with specific drills will address that issue.
"Seshia had a great tournament as an individual with her all-time low of 214. She really came to play this week. Her teammates can learn a lot from her will to perform at a high level. We are very proud of her mental discipline on the course. Her golf game is maturing both physically and mentally."
Washington ran away with the team title with an 11-under 853, 25 strokes better than its intrastate rival Washington State Cougars, which finished second with a 14-over 878. Husky Charlotte Thomas won medalist honors with a 5-under 211.
Sophomore Anica Yoo had a very solid tournament with a 3-over 71-74-74--219 for a tie for 11th place, her best finish in a collegiate tournament after finishing in a tie for 12th at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational as a freshman. She led the Beavers with nine birdies over the three rounds, including two on Tuesday, and showed once again that she will be a regular contributor all season.
Freshman Chelsea Saelee finished in a tie for 53rd place in her first collegiate event with an 18-over 75-78-81--234, while junior Lauren Sewell and senior Rachael Fischer each tied for 63rd with a 22-over 238.
But the story of the tournament for the Beavers was Telles, who became just the third Oregon State player to finish in red figures in a three-round tournament, joining Takaishi and Whitney French who had a 1-under 215 two years ago at the Rose City Collegiate.
It was Telles' fourth career top-10 finish and her best placing in a three-round tournament, bettering the tie for ninth place she had at the 2010 Circling Raven Invitational in her first-ever collegiate event. She tied for medalist honors that same year at the Washington National Individual Championship that was a one-round event against Portland State.
Telles improved her school-best career scoring average to 75.94 and chalked up her fourth career under-par round with the excellent showing at the first event of her junior season.
Takaishi, who is the lone Oregon State women's golfer to earn All-America honors when she posted a school-best 75.68 scoring average in 1997-98, is the head coach at Portland State and was at this week's Oregon State Invitational with her Vikings finishing 12th. She served as the Beavers' assistant golf coach from 2004-08.
Oregon State golfers competing as individuals all shot their best round of the tournament on Tuesday, led by a career-best 2-over 74 by junior Melissa Gibbons and followed closely by a 3-over 75 by senior Chelsey Lind and a 6-over 78 by sophomore Lauren Fischer. Gibbons finished in a tie for 55th with a 19-over 81-80-74--235, Lind was tied for 63rd with a 22-over 76-87-75--238 and Fischer concluded play with a 26-over 81-83-78--242 for a tie for 72nd.
Oregon State has two weeks off before traveling north on I-5 to compete at the Rose City Collegiate in Wilsonville, Ore., on Monday, Oct. 1 and Tuesday, Oct. 2 at the Langdon Farms Golf Club.
