CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ryan Gorton went 2-for-4 with an RBI and threw 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief with four strikeouts to pace the 20th-ranked Oregon State baseball team to an 8-2 non-conference win over Portland Tuesday night at Goss Stadium.
Gorton doubled and singled in the win, the Beavers' 13th consecutive over their in-state rivals. He was also the fourth pitcher of the game for the Beavers, and struck out four Pilots while throwing 24 pitches. He did not, however, figure in the decision.
The win went to right-handed reliever Scott Schultz, who came on in the first and worked 3 1/3 innings. He allowed four hits with a strikeout to improve to 2-0 this season.
Offensively, the 15-hit OSU (18-8 overall) offensive attack was led by Kavin Keyes, who went 3-for-4 in a start at third base. Dylan Davis also had two hits in the win.
Both Michael Conforto and Tyler Smith extended their hit streaks to eight games. Conforto singled home a run in the third while Smith reached on an infield single in the seventh. Smith also finished with three RBI in the win as he also drove in a run on a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly.
Matt McCallister took the loss for Portland (16-7) and dropped to 3-1 this season. He allowed seven hits and four runs over three innings.
The Beavers scored two runs in both the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings. OSU took the lead for good in the third when Conforto singled home one and an additional run scored on a Pilots' error.
In all, the Beavers used six pitchers. OSU held Portland to seven hits with five walks and 14 strikeouts.
Kris Kauppila led Portland with two hits in the loss.
