Oregon State Baseball Hangs On To Down UCLA, Win Series

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Ryan Gorton hit a two-run single to put Oregon State up for good and Tony Bryant worked 2 1/3 innings for the win as the Beavers downed UCLA, 7-6, Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Goss Stadium. The win pushed Oregon State to a 2-1 series win over the Bruins.
UCLA had runners on first and second with two down in the ninth, by Bryant was able to get UCLA right fielder Jeff Gelalich to fly out to left to close out the game. With the win, the Beavers improved to 26-12 overall this season and 8-7 in Pac-12 Conference play. UCLA, meanwhile, dropped to 26-10 overall and 11-7 in league action.
Gorton found runners at second and third in the seventh after Tyler Smith walked and Michael Conforto doubled to right. Gorton hit a 1-1 pitch from UCLA reliever Ryan Deeter up the middle and past a drawn in infield to give OSU a 6-4 lead.
Ryan Dettman later scored on a passed ball to score the Beavers' seventh-run of the game, which turned out to be the game-winner after the Bruins scored two in the ninth.
Oregon State took advantage of three errors by UCLA starter Zack Weiss to take an early 2-0 lead and later, after Cody Regis tied the game with a two-run home run in the second, a 4-2 advantage. The Bruins tied the score with two runs in the seventh.
Conforton and Gorton both grounded out in the first after Weiss committed two errors to give OSU a 2-0 lead. Jake Rodriguez singled home a run in the fourth and later watched as Max Gordon was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded for the 4-2 lead.
Dan Child started and worked 6 1/3 innings for the Beavers but did not get the decision. He allowed four hits and three runs, throwing just 69 pitches.
Bryant picked up the win after throwing a season-high 45 pitches in a season-long 2 1/3 innings. He allowed six hits and two runs and improved to 4-1 this season.
David Berg was saddled with the loss for UCLA after allowing two hits and two runs in 2 2/3 innings of relief. He fell to 2-2 this season.
Weiss started for the Bruins and did not get the decision. He allowed two hits and four runs - all unearned - in 3 1/3 innings.
Gelalich and Regis each had three hits for the Bruins, who tallied 12 as a team. John Tommasini was the lone Beaver with two hits.
Oregon State plays a non-conference game against Oregon Tuesday night at PK Park in Eugene. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m. PT and can be seen live on Comcast SportsNet Northwest (channel 37 on Comcast) in Oregon.
