PORTLAND, Ore. - Jake Rodriguez hit a three-run home run in the second and Dan Child scattered six hits over 7 1/3 innings to lead the Oregon State baseball team to a 5-0 win over Portland Monday afternoon at Joe Etzel Field.
Rodriguez hit a three-run home run in the second - his second round-tripper of the season - to send the Beavers to their 14th consecutive win over Portland and eighth straight at Joe Etzel Field. The home run came on a 2-0 pitch from Portland starter Jeremy Burright and it scored Ryan Gorton and Kavin Keyes to give the Beavers a four-run lead.
The four runs were all Child needed as the starter finished with his seventh quality start of the season to improve to 4-2 this season. He held Portland (20-11 overall) scoreless in scattering six hits and tied a season-high with nine strikeouts. He did not issue a walk.
Burright worked just two innings for the Pilots and took the loss to fall to 0-1 this season. He allowed four hits and four runs.
The Beavers (24-11) took a 1-0 lead in the first when Michael Conforto, the Pac-12's leading run producer, drove in his 51st of the season on a sacrifice fly to right that was caught at the fence. It scored Joey Matthews, who had singled to open the game and moved to third when Tyler Smith singled.
Ryan Barnes finished off the game's scoring with a pinch-hit single in the ninth, scoring Ryan Dettman from second.
Gorton had a team-leading three hits for his sixth multi-hit game of the year. By going 3-for-4, he extended his hit streak to a season-long five games.
Rodriguez also doubled in the seventh for his ninth multiple-hit game of the season.
Chet Thompson and Jeff Melby both had two hits for the Pilots, who managed to place runners on third twice but failed to drive them in.
Oregon State now turns its sights to No. 11 UCLA, which visits Goss Stadium for a three-game series starting Friday. Tickets remain for the series and can be purchased online at osubeavers.com, over the phone by calling 1-800-GOBEAVS or visiting the ticket office at Gill Coliseum. Fans may also purchase tickets on game day at the Goss Stadium ticket office, which opens two hours before first pitch.
