REDWOOD SHORES, Calif. - The Oregon State men's crew team finished day one of the Pac-12 Challenge/Stanford Invitational on Saturday and had plenty of solid results to build on, especially in a V8 matchup with No. 4 Wisconsin, on the waters of Redwood Shores, Calif.
On a windy, but relatively calm and sunny day, the Beavers dominated races in the morning session, cruising to victory in the V8, JV8 and F8 events.
"The morning session was a good start for the team," Oregon State head coach Steve Todd said. "We jumped out early in all the races and stayed long and comfortable."
OSU's V8, which remains ranked 18th in the nation in the most recent polls, defeated UC Davis by 12 seconds while the squad's JV8 beat the Aggies by 16 seconds. The Beavers' Frosh 8, split its morning races, speeding past Santa Clara's JV8 in a time of 6:25.9, but falling to Cal despite posting a faster time of 6:24.9 the second time around.
The afternoon session was highlighted by the top-20 V8 encounter between the No. 18 Beavers and No. 4 Badgers. OSU raced extremely well against some of the nation's toughest competition, crossing the finish line in 5:56.2, just six seconds behind Wisconsin. The Badgers also claimed victories in JV8 and F8 races.
"Wisconsin really raced well today in all three of our contests," Todd said. "I think that our varsity is making improvements and starting to get some speed. We've got to capitalize on momentum and carry this through the rest of the season."
In addition to the crews in Northern California, Oregon State's Novice 4 challenged itself by competing in the Varsity 4 event at Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake. The Beavers showed well as its novice group defeated a quartet of experienced varsity crews from Lewis & Clark, Seattle Pacific, Humboldt State and San Diego State.
"There were great conditions and we had excellent racing today," novice coach Stefan Evano said. "The men's four got out to a great start and stayed in control all the way thought the course."
The Beavers' busy weekend will conclude tomorrow morning when the V8, JV8 and F8 crews close out the Stanford Invitational with races against UC San Diego.
