STANFORD, Calif. - Junior Elizabeth Santana reached base safely for the 11th consecutive game and senior Erin Guzy extended her hitting streak to three in a row, but Stanford's Teagan Gerhart scattered four hits over seven innings of work, as the 23rd-ranked Oregon State softball team was blanked at the hands of No. 15 Stanford, 7-0, on Saturday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium.
Santana, batting leadoff for the first time this season, started the contest with a single into the deep hole between shortstop and third base. She stole second and moved to third on a groundout, but was left just 60-feet from home when Paige Hall lined a shot to center field that Stanford's Cassandra Roulund did a nice job of tracking down for the third out.
The Beavers' (27-13, 4-6 Pac-12) starting shortstop went 1-for-2 on the day, continuing her hot streak since the start of Pac-12 play. In the team's last 11 games, Santana is batting .455 (15-for-33) with three home runs, 11 RBI and seven runs scored.
Stanford (31-12, 5-9 Pac-12) took a slight 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but broke the game open in the third courtesy of a two-out rally. A pair of walks and a single loaded the bases for Jenna Becerra, who hit a grand slam to left field to extend the Cardinal lead to 5-0.
Stanford, which scored six of its seven runs on just two hits, made the final score 7-0 when Ashley Hansen tripled home a pair in the bottom of the sixth.
Guzy had her eighth multi-hit game of the year after going 2-for-3 with a double. Her two-bagger in the seventh was the 28th of her career and puts her just two shy of moving into the top 10 in Oregon State history in that category. Freshman Ya Garcia was the other Beaver to reach base by way of a hit when she laid down a beautiful bunt single in the fifth.
Oregon State was shutout for only the second time all year, in this its 40th game. The only other time the Beavers were held scoreless, they bounced back the next day for a huge 7-5 win over then-No. 14 UCLA on April 1 in what was OSU's most recent road series.
This three-game set against Stanford concludes tomorrow, Sunday, April 15. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
