Corvallis, Ore. (AP) – Sophomore Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) led the Beavers with 15 points, but a free throw-line jumper by Erica Barnes with 12 seconds remaining gave Arizona a 58-56 win against Oregon State on Saturday afternoon.
A buzzer-beater three-point attempt from about 35 feet by junior Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) as time expired was off the mark.
“Arizona played great today despite being sick and a couple of players not playing,” head coach Scott Rueck said. “So that meant that everybody else had to step up, and they did. The team that usually hits big shots wins, and they won today. I liked our effort for the most part, but I didn't think we were on our “A” game offensively, and we didn't execute well enough to pull away from this team. I thought we had a couple of opportunities where we could, so credit [Arizona]. They hit big shots and stuck with us and found a way to win it.”
Junior Patricia Bright (Phoenix, Ariz.) added 11 points and seven blocks for the Beavers (11-6, 2-4 Pac-12), while Indendi rounded out the Oregon State scorers in double-figures with 10 points.
Arizona scored the first five points of the second half to tie the game at 26-26 after Oregon State headed into the locker room with a 26-21 lead at the half, shooting 37.9 percent to Arizona's 30.0 percent and collecting a pair more field goals than the Wildcats.
The game was tied two more times before Whyte's three-pointer with 14:51 remaining gave the Wildcats their first lead since the opening basket of the game at 33-32.
Oregon State later scored nine straight points, with junior Shakiana Edward-Teasley's (Lapwai, Idaho) three-pointer putting the Beavers ahead 47-42 with 9:09 left.
But Arizona came back to tie the game at 48-48 on a Barnes free throw with 4:38 left.
Oregon State answered with Martin scoring on two straight layins for a four-point lead at the 52-48 mark, but Arizona answered with six points in a row on a Barnes three-point play and an Erin Butler three-pointer that gave the Wildcats a 56-54 lead with 1:12 left.
Indendi tied the game with a 15-foot jumper on the next possession, just beating the shot clock, before Barnes hit the go-ahead basket for Arizona.
Barnes had a game-high 18 points and 11 rebounds for Arizona (13-4, 2-3 Pac-12). Shanita Arnold and Davellyn Whyte added 15 points apiece for the Wildcats.
Oregon State heads to Los Angeles next week, facing UCLA first on Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the John Wooden Center.
