Corvallis, Ore. – Freshman Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) hit errorless with 15 kills on 20 attempts with six blocks to pace all hitters and blockers in Oregon State volleyball's (5-2) sweep of Seattle (1-7) in the final match of the Active Ankle Challenge to take the tournament title.
Set scores were 25-10, 25-17, 25-20.
“We sided out well and had great attacking as a team,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “Those are great numbers by Arica [Nassar] and same thing with Dre [Shaw]. I think we really showed that if we handle the ball in passing and in transition on down balls and free balls and get our hitters swings, we will be pretty good. Also good job by Tayla [Woods] this weekend stepping in for Megan [McBride] at setter. And good job by everyone who came in the matches this weekend.”
Senior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) was nearly errorless with 11 kills, six digs and two blocks for Oregon State with her overall play in the tournament earning her Most Valuable Player honors. Junior Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) also was named to the All-Tournament Team.
Defensively, sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) led all backcourt defense with 14 digs with redshirt freshman Tayla Woods (Corvallis, Ore.) contributing nine for a near double-double with 36 assists.
Oregon State capitalized on Seattle's 30 hitting and serving errors, 21 unforced, and hit .395 to Seattle's .100.
Seattle's Sarah Jaeckel led the Redhawks with 11 kills.
Oregon State heads to Southern California next to compete in the Long Beach State Baden Classic. The Beavers will take on the SMU Mustangs first at 11:00 a.m. on Friday.
