Volleyball Comes Up Short against Arizona

Corvallis, Ore. – After taking the first set, the Oregon State volleyball team (9-3, 1-1 Pac-12) came up short against Arizona (9-2, 1-1 Pac-12) in four sets (25-23, 20-25, 21-25, 17-25) on Saturday evening in legendary Gill Coliseum.
“The second set we were up 17-13, and we stopped passing and playing defense,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “That was the turning point in the match for us. Our passing and setting were off, and we just had some untimely bad plays. Losing Dre [Shaw] was tough, but we have to step it up and people need to work hard to get in the mix here.
The issue was too many strings of errors – 16 times in this match we had two or more errors in a row. And we never got into a consistent sideout mode after that second set when we were ahead. I tried to find the right combination with the setter, but they were all over the map in the sense of not getting a consistent set to our hitters. If you take a look at Cursty Jackson, we couldn't stop her – she had a great day hitting. We just did not respond to that.”
Senior Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i) was sidelined after earning six kills with a high ankle sprain coming down from a block in the third set. She added nine digs and a block, as well.
Junior Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) led the Beavers as the only player to reach double-digits in the kills column with 12. She also added the second-most digs with 10, while sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) dug a match-high tying 19 balls.
Oregon State got off to a great start in the first set, despite a late rally by Arizona, the Beavers outplayed the Wildcats to take the early lead. Oregon State looked poised to continue its run in the second set, but the Beavers were unable to find the floor, only tallying nine kills on 32 attempts.
Arizona built early leads in the third and fourth sets that it was able to hold to finish out the match.
Arizona's Cursty Jackson led all hitters with 21 kills, while Candace Nicholson earned 19 digs.
Oregon State heads to Utah and Colorado next. The Beavers will face off against the Utes first on Friday at 6:00 p.m. PT.
Oregon State Notes – Junior Camille Saxton earned her first double-double of the year, fourth career, with 12 kills and 10 digs.
