Oregon State Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach Pat Casey
Opening Statement
"We won. You know, I am not entirely sure we played as well as we wanted to, but like I said yesterday at this time of year you just want to win. Our guys battled. We had two freshmen on the mound to get to the Super with (Adam) Duke and (Scott) Schultz, and then Tony (Bryant). I thought I was going to have to give him mouth-to-mouth, and I said `no, you are going to throw'. There is not a lot to say but these guys get the chance to do something remarkable and I am happy for them."
On Josh Osich's performance...
"He was just having a lot of trouble throwing it where he wanted. So I didn't want to put him in any jeopardy and that's about it. He was having a little trouble doing what he wanted to do."
On his performance being a reflection of possible physical injury...
"I think he has just been stiff and sore. He has not used some of those muscles in over a year and I really don't know. He didn't look right. He wanted to stay out there simply because he is competitive and we just didn't think that that was the right thing to do."
On Scott Schultz's performance...
"Phenomenal. Lights out. I think he came into a game against Arizona State and retired 14 in a row or something, and he has just been really good for us. And overall it was just a team effort tonight."
On Osich's pitching situation for the Super Regional...
"At this time, I really don't know. I'll find out. He'll see the trainer tomorrow and team doctor probably tomorrow. It could be nothing. I really don't know and he didn't have a lot of answers, and he wanted to stay out there because he wanted to win but I don't think he was commanding anything. So I really don't have a good answer for that at this point."
On thought process of taking pitcher Tony Bryant out after getting hit...
"No. He wasn't coming out. I told him he could, but I knew he wasn't going to."
On any specific turning point(s) in game...
"One of the keys was when Schultz came in and closed the door, shutting the momentum down. We were a little frustrated with guys in scoring position and not being able to score some guys and then we did some incredible things on the bases. Once you have one run and then turn it into two runs, it usually changes the game a little bit."
On having confidence in depth of bullpen pitchers...
"Our bullpen has been pretty good. We haven't used a lot of guys and we haven't been very deep there. But I think Duke was electric tonight. But at that point in time I wasn't thinking about it. I mean the hard thing is playing knowing that you could be playing tomorrow, and asking yourself if these are the decisions that you want to make. But I have all of the confidence in the world in our bullpen."
On saying anything to pitcher Adam Duke before putting him in...
"I was thinking that they might have more difficulty with speed and he threw the ball well at Oregon. We also didn't have a lot of options. We had Cole Baylis that we could've gone to and we had Adam Duke, but at that time we were kind of running out of bullets."
On the outfield line-up of Nash, Stamps, and Barnes, and feeling of their continuing consistency...
"Stamps and Barnes are going to play every game now, and that is because they have proven it. The other spot I feel just as good with Nash or Norris, and put Danny Hayes at first, or Parker. Parker's energy in the last two nights was a big key to our club and I think his presence was huge for us. He has been a captain, and a guy who's caught, played first, DH, and I thought that he was a big part of our success this weekend. That left field thing for me is still wide open."
Pitcher Tony Bryant
On getting hit after throwing the pitch...
"It hit me right in the shoulder, I think on the deltoid muscle. It just happened so fast. I threw the ball and the next thing you know, shoulder pain. After a while, I said I wasn't going to come this far and give up now so the adrenaline came in, the crowd got into it and just do it like I always have."
On the delay...
"I didn't know what was wrong. I wanted to get going because it was getting stiffer and stiffer every time I waited. I didn't know if it was a problem where it was going to be delayed for a long time or not. I went down to the bullpen and got ready to go."
On the shoulder being ready for the super regionals...
"I think for a couple of days it's going to be sore and stiff. Just like if I was a hitter and I got hit by a pitch. I think a couple days off of rest and then right back out and I'll be fine."
First Baseman Parker Berberet
On the team's hitting during regionals...
"It's been awesome. Every guy has had a chip on his shoulder and has been able to drive the ball. Watching (Brian) Stamps hit that ball out of the ball park today, I couldn't prouder. I'm just really proud of what our team's done."
On hitting the home run to set the tone...
"It was really big. It's always nice to strike right back once they score a run and show that we're here to play. It got us going a little bit."
On being picked 8th in the Pac-10 and going to Super Regionals...
"It's been awesome proving all those people wrong and showing that the Beavers can play. It doesn't matter where they picked you to be, it's how you play. The best team doesn't win, it's who plays the best and we proved that there."
On winning three games in a row...
"I don't think anything really changed coming in. We knew we were a good club and we just knew what we had to do to win this regional and we now we move onto the super regionals and do the same thing. Just keep winning."
Pitcher Scott Schultz
On getting ready in the dugout...
"I went out there around the second inning. Nate (Yeskie) told me to be ready, to start throwing. I just went down there with my head cleared and ready to throw."
On coming in the game in the second inning...
"Throughout the season, I've usually been after (Josh) Osich. I just had to get my mind right from the first inning. Down in Oregon I was told that he was tight down there and again he told me today I would be first out of the pen, so get my mind right early. It's just what we've been doing all year; nothing's really changed."
Georgia Post-Game Quotes
Head Coach David Perno
Opening Statement
"Oregon State had all the answers. Every time we scored they came right back and answered us. We just couldn't get tough outs and shutdown innings. We needed it and we were just short a couple of hits."
On the competition Oregon State will see in the next round...
"It's going to be tough. Vanderbilt is really, really good. Oregon State, not to take anything away from them, they have a good ballclub. But Vanderbilt runs a lot of arms against you that are all really, really talented and a lineup that has a lot of balance and can get you out a lot of different ways. Vanderbilt is as good of team as we played."
On whether Georgia may have been tired tonight...
"No, I don't. Maybe fatigue from our pitching staff. We have a thin pitching staff. We just didn't have any shutdown guys. We've been doing the best we could all year. It's been a thin pitching staff. I don't think the position players were tired. The temperatures were fine. We play better when we're playing. And we played well tonight; you just have to tip your hats to Oregon State. They played better."
On the overall play tonight...
"We played great. That's who we are. We battled, hung in there, we stayed out in the big inning, we played defense. He gave us a chance and we missed an opportunity early. It just catches us at the bottom of the order. We had a hobbling freshman that was trying to play in Brandon Stephens and Coner Welton had a great SEC tournament but just really struggled here. That was a big moment right there. I think if we could have extended there and got a little space with our lead. (Scott) Schultz was the guy. I think he came in and we really struggled with him. He gave them a chance, because it was just like he started. They got (Josh) Osich out of there so quick. He came in and got out of the jam and settled in there and threw about four more innings. It was really tough on us."
Shortstop Kyle Farmer
On facing all the different Oregon State pitchers...
"They did a great job mixing up their pitches and had great off speed. It was tough. Facing the other teams they had slower fastballs but Oregon State did a great job tonight mixing up their pitches and getting us out. They did a great job."
Second baseman Levi Hyams
On his thoughts about the Oregon State pitchers...
"Well they threw a lot of arms at us. Getting a lot of different looks is a little bit tougher than facing one guy. You don't have any time to settle in and figure out what he is throwing. They keep you off balance. Credit to them they kept us off balance with their off speed. They snuck fastballs in there every now and then. But they did a good job and they just got a few more hits than we did."
