Softball Drops Doubleheader to No. 5 Arizona

CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State softball team dropped the final two games of a three-game set against No. 5 (USA Softball) Arizona Saturday at the Oregon State Softball Complex. The Wildcats won the first game by a score of 4-1 and then won the second game by a 6-3 margin.
Game 1 - Arizona 4, Oregon State 1
The Beavers loaded the bases in the first inning with two outs but were unable to push one across. They got at least two runners on base in all but one inning but was unable to push a run across until the bottom of the seventh.
Arizona got on the board first in the top of the third inning with three unearned runs after the first batter of the inning reached base on an error by the Beavers' starting pitcher Paige Hall on a comebacker.
The Wildcats threatened to add more runs in the sixth but were twice thrown out at the plate, once attempting to score on a wild pitch and the second on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded. They did pick up a run in the top of the seventh inning to increase their lead to 4-0.
Erin Guzy started off the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Hall then reached base after being hit by a pitch and was immediately pinch ran for by Emily Richardson. Desire Beltran then walked to load the bases with nobody out. After the next batter recorded an out, Audrey Roderfeld grounded out to third base scoring the Beavers only run of the game.
Hall started for the Beavers and pitched five innings surrendering five hits. She walked two, struck out four and surrendered three runs, none of which were earned in the losing effort. She fell to 6-3 with the loss while Arizona Starter Shelby Babcock improved to 12-2 with the win.
A total of 24 batters were left on base, 13 by the Beavers and 11 by the Wildcats.
Game 2 - Arizona 6, Oregon State 3
The Wildcats took the early 1-0 lead with a bases loaded sacrifice fly RBI in the top of the first inning. They increased their lead with a run in the second and two more in the third to take a 4-0 lead going in to the bottom of the third inning.
Nikki Chandler led off the bottom of the third for the Beavers with an infield single to the shortstop. She then moved to third on a double by Lea Cavestany. After Maggie Doremus popped out to short, Chandler scored on a wild pitch for the Beavers first run of the day. The one run in the third brought the score to 4-1 in favor of the Wildcats.
The Beavers added another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI infield single by Doremus scoring Lippincott who pinch ran for Mary Claire Brenner who led off the inning with a walk. The score stood at 4-2 going to the top of the sixth.
After the Wildcats added two more runs in the top of the sixth Hall came to the plate with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning and blasted her fifth home run of the season over the left field fence to cut the lead to 6-3 which would be the final score. Hall finished the day 2-for-4 with a run scored and the home run. She walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Doremus went 3-for-7 on the day with a RBI.
Tina Andreana started for the game in the circle for the Beavers and pitched her second complete game in two days. She gave up six runs, four earned, on seven hits. She walked six while striking out five and fell to 4-5 with the loss. She threw 156 pitches in the game after she threw 151 on Friday totaling 307 pitches for the weekend.
Babcock recorded her second win of the day for the Wildcats after throwing a complete game. She gave up the three runs on six hits while walking four and striking out only one batter. She improved to 13-2 with the win.
