Cavestany's Leadoff Home Run Paces Beavers Past Santa Clara, 4-3

SARATOGA, Calif. - Sophomore Lea Cavestany led off the game by hitting the third pitch see saw off the scoreboard in right center field setting the tone for the Oregon State softball team who defeated the Santa Clara Broncos by a score of 4-3 in Saratoga, Calif. on the campus of West Valley College.
Cavestany reached base in three out of her four plate appearances in the game and finished the game going 1-for-3 with a the solo home run and a walk. She also reached base on a fielder's choice in the fourth inning.
Oregon State (18-13 overall) took the 1-0 lead to the bottom of the first inning before Santa Clara (6-15) took the lead on a two-run home run to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead through one inning.
After both teams went in order in the second inning, Nikki Chandler led off the third for the Beavers with a shot to deep short for her first hit of the game. After Cavestany walked and Maggie Doremus moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, Erin Guzy loaded the bases by reaching on an error by the Bronco shortstop.
After a pop fly out on the infield for the second out of the inning, Desiree Beltran was hit by a pitch forcing in a run and then Mary Claire Brenner was walked forcing in the second run of the inning and reclaiming the lead for the Beavers at 3-2. Chandler went 2-for-2 in the game with a run scored for her fifth multi-hit game of the season.
Oregon State starting pitcher Paige Hall threw the first two innings of the game and gave up two earned runs on two hits while striking out one. Tina Andreana came into the game in relief to start the third inning and threw the final five innings of the game.
The Beavers added another run in the top of the fourth after Ashley Sanchez led off the inning with a pinch hit single and then came around to score in the inning giving the Beavers a 4-2 advantage.
Santa Clara added a run in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI double and had runners at the corners with one out. The runner at first took off for second on the first pitch of the next at bat but catcher Audrey Roderfeld rifled the ball to second where it was cut off by Doremus in front of the second base bag and then picked off the runner at third for the second out of the inning. Andreana then shut down the Broncos' threat in the sixth by striking out the next batter to end the inning.
Andreana ended the game pitching the final five innings. She allowed one earned run on three Bronco hits and struck out six while walking none in a winning effort. She moves to 5-5 on the season while Broncos' starter Jessica Turner fell to 1-10 with the loss.
Andreana and starting pitcher Hall combined for seven strikeouts in the game and did not walk a single batter. It is the first time that the Beavers did not walk a batter in a game since Hall pitched a perfect game against Western Michigan in the second game of the season.
The Beavers are back between the lines tomorrow when they open a three-game set against Stanford with first pitch slated for 7 p.m.
