CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore starting pitcher Tina Andreana pitched a one run gem Friday afternoon as the Beavers defeated the No. 5 (USA Softball) Arizona Wildcats by a final score of 3-1 in front of a season high crowd of 453.
Andreana pitched a complete game throwing all seven innings giving up the one run on eight hits and struck out seven Wildcats while throwing a season high 151 pitches to improve to 4-4 with the win.
The Wildcats (32-7 overall, 3-1 Pacific-10 Conference) racked up 14 base runners in the game but could only score the one run, coming as a leadoff home run in the top of the seventh, stranding 13 runners. Arizona's leadoff hitter, Brittany Lastrapes, and its second hitter, Lauren Schutzler, left a combined eight runners on base.
Andreana pitched out of bases loaded trouble in the second when she induced a foul out and again in the fourth inning with a strikeout to end the threats.
Lastrapes, Arizona's leading hitter, came into the game hitting .487 and went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout. The strikeout came in the top of the sixth with two runners on. She also fouled out to end the second inning with the bases loaded.
The Beavers (17-11, 1-3) broke through in the bottom half of the third inning when Ashley Sanchez led off the game with a walk. Lea Cavestany then singled through the right side. Sanchez and Cavestany advanced to third and second respectively after Maggie Doremus reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases.
After the next two batters struck out for the first and second outs of the inning, Desiree Beltran singled up the middle scoring Sanchez and Cavestany. The Beavers added another run in the fourth on a bases loaded single to center field by Erin Guzy giving the Beavers a 3-0 lead through four innings.
Oregon State put runners on third in both the fifth and sixth innings but could not increase their lead going to the top of the seventh and the last chance for the Wildcats.
Arizona's Brigette Del Ponte led off the seventh with a solo home run over the left field fence to close the gap to two runs. The Wildcats had two on with the go-ahead run at the plate with two outs before Baillie Kirker flew out to Sanchez in left to end the game.
Guzy went 1-for-3 in the game with a run batted in while Beltran went 1-for-1 with a walk, two RBIs and a hit by pitch. Paige Hall, Cavestany and Nikki Chandler all added hits in the game.
The leadoff hitters for the Beavers went 5-for-6 in the game and only failed to reach base in the bottom of the first. The Beavers were also 2-for-4 with the bases loaded.
Arizona's starting pitcher Kenzie Fowler, the reigning Pac-10 and national player of the week after pitching 15.1 scoreless innings in a sweep of Stanford last weekend, pitched six innings and gave up all three of Oregon State's runs, all earned, to fall to 20-5 on the season.
The Beavers will be back at it Saturday for a doubleheader due to possible rain on Sunday. The first game of the doubleheader will be at 12 p.m. with the second game starting approximately 30 minutes following the completion of the first game.
Notes: The Beavers are now 1-4 on the season against top 25 teams ... The win is the first over the Wildcats since the 2005 season ... Lea Cavestany has now hit safely in her last four game ... Erin Guzy has now hit safely in her last three games.
