Varsity 4+ Finishes Fifth, Second Varsity 8 Wins Petite Final at Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
The Oregon State women's rowing team finished the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday with three hotly contested races on Mission Bay.
Sunday's racing ended with the Beavers' in first and third place of the Second Varsity 8+ petite final, with the Oregon State 'A' boat winning the petite final and the Oregon State 'B' crew, made up of novices, earning the third place finish just behind Iowa and just ahead of Alabama in a three-boat race for second.
“The two varsity eights got off to a pretty rough start yesterday and we were disappointed to be so far off the pace of the top group,” head coach Emily Ford said of Saturday's heat racing. “It was nice to see the Four make the grand final and a great accomplishment for the novices to make the Second Varsity petite final. Today was a better day all around. We made some adjustments and I was happy to see all of the boats come back out fighting.”
OSU's Varsity 4+ raced to a fifth place finish in the Karen Plumleigh Cortney Cup Grand Final. The Beavers finished nearly 17-seconds behind the winning crew from UCLA. The Beavers' Varsity 8+ added a fifth place finish in the petite final getting edged out for fourth by a half-second by University of San Diego.
“We learned some hard lessons this weekend and we have a lot of work to do from here. Our success this season will depend on our willingness to roll up our sleeves and get work on the task.”
The Beavers have next weekend off before traveling to Sacramento, Calif. to compete in the Lake Natoma Invitational April 16-17.
