CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State baseball team's 11-game win streak came to an end Saturday afternoon in a pitcher's duel as the third-ranked Beavers dropped a 2-0 decision to Washington State in front of a season-best 3,041 fans Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium.
Nevertheless, the Beavers still won their fourth consecutive Pacific-10 Conference series after defeating the Cougars 4-2 on Friday and 7-6 on Saturday.
Josh Osich threw 6 1/3 innings against the Cougars Saturday, scattering eight hits and two runs with eight strikeouts. The lefty was bested by Washington State starter James Wise, who held the Beavers off the scoreboard for 7 2/3 innings. He allowed just three hits, walked five and struck out four to improve to 4-4 this season.
Osich's first run allowed came in the third when Derek Jones singled through the right side. The Cougars scored their second and final run in the sixth when Jay Ponciano reached first on an infield single to Kavin Keyes at third, narrowly beating the throw.
Osich dropped to 5-1 this season.
Paris Shewey picked up his seventh save of the season for the Cougars, who improved to 15-19 overall and 3-12 in Pac-10 play. Shewey allowed a hit in the ninth but induced Tyler Smith to ground out for a game-ending double play.
Brett Jacobs and Jason Monda both had two hits to pace the Cougars, who had nine overall on the day.
The Beavers dropped to 29-8 overall and 10-2 in league play. Oregon State holds a half-game lead in the Pac-10 race.
Oregon State steps out of Pac-10 play Tuesday afternoon when the Beavers make their second trip of the season to Portland. First pitch at Joe Etzel Field is scheduled for 3 p.m. PT.
