CORVALLIS, Ore. - Parker Berberet doubled home two in the Beavers' three-run seventh and James Nygren worked eight innings to pace the No. 3 Oregon State baseball team to a 4-2 series-opening win over Washington State Thursday night at Goss Stadium.
Berberet drove home Luke Acosta and Ryan Dunn with a double to right center with no outs in the bottom of the seventh to break a 1-1 stalemate and send the Beavers to their 10th consecutive win, which is the longest active streak in the nation.
"Parker saw a pitch he liked and drove it to the best spot he could have," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "Overall, this was a solid effort against a team that is very solid. Washington State is a tough club and has always played us well."
Nygren worked eight innings in his ninth appearance and fifth start of the season. He scattered two runs - the first coming on a fourth-inning solo home run by Derek Jones - and seven hits while striking out a personal-best eight.
He threw his fourth quality start of the season and in the process improved to 6-1 this season.
The Beavers (28-7 overall, 9-1 Pacific-10 Conference) scored their first run of the game in the first when Kavin Keyes, who saw his 14-game hit streak snapped, lofted a fly to right that was dropped by Jones. Brian Stamps, who had doubled to open the inning, scored from third.
Jones' homer pushed it to a 1-1 game but the Beavers' three runs in the seventh gave them the lead for good. Dunn led off the inning with a single, and moved to third when Acosta doubled down the left field line. That led to Berberet's double on a 3-2 pitch off Conley, who took the loss and dropped to 4-5 this season.
Conley allowed five hits and four runs in 6 1/3 innings.
Berberet scored the Beavers' final run in the inning when Stamps reached on an infield single.
Tony Bryant, who earlier in the day was named to the NCBWA's Stopper of the Year Watch List, picked up the final three outs in the ninth, quelling a Washington State (14-18, 2-11) rally that saw the Cougars score one run and place a runner at second. It was Bryant's sixth save of the season.
Berberet and Stamps both had two hits to lead the Beavers, who finished with six off three Washington State pitchers.
Jones and Taylor Ard each had two hits for the Cougars.
