Softball Falls to No. 19 Oregon in Civil War Opener

EUGENE - The Oregon State softball team fell to the No. 19 Oregon Ducks Thursday night at Howe Field by a score of 7-1.
Oregon (31-11 overall, 3-7 Pacific-10 Conference) got on the board first in the bottom of the third inning on a base hit to center field with a runner on second. The runner advanced to third on the hit and then scored when Beavers' centerfielder Lea Cavestany could not come up with the ball cleanly. Oregon added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-0 lead.
Tina Andreana started the game for the Beavers (18-17, 1-9) and threw 3.1 innings allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits. She also walked two and struck out four in the losing effort. She falls to 5-8 with the loss.
Paige Hall came in relieve of Andreana with an out in the fourth inning and gave up three runs, none of which were earned. She walked one and struck out two of the 13 total batters she faced.
Hall had no official plate appearances in the game walking three times and hitting as sacrifice fly in the top half of the seventh to drive in the Beavers' lone run of the game.
Oregon State had the bases loaded in the top of the sixth with two outs and down 4-0 when Ashley Sanchez had the longest at bat of the night for the Beavers. She battled with the count full, fouling off pitch after pitch, until finally on the 12th pitch of the at bat she fouled out to the catcher to end the Beavers' threat in the sixth.
Oregon added three unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-0 lead before Oregon State could break through with a run in the top of the seventh inning on a Hall sacrifice foul to the short stop in foul ground down the left field line scoring Cavestany from third who had led off the inning with a single and was moved to third on an Erin Guzy double.
Cavestany ended the game going 2-for-3 with the Beavers only run scored while Guzy added two hits of her own with a single in the fourth and a double in the sixth. She ended the day 2-for-4.
Jessica Moore went the distance for Oregon allowing one earned run on six hits to improve to 16-6 on the season.
Oregon State and Oregon square off Friday in the second game of the three-game set with a start time of 6 p.m. The game will be televised live on Comcast Sports Net Northwest.
