Three OSU Crews Race to Grand Finals at Crew Classic

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
On the first day of racing at the San Diego Crew Classic, all three Oregon State crews rowed to three second place finishes and advanced to tomorrow's Grand Finals. OSU's Varsity 8+, Junior Varsity 8+, and Freshman 8+ will each vie to take home the hardware Sunday.
In the race of the day OSU's JV8+ race proved to be a learning experience for the Beavers. Oregon State rowed a tight race with the UC San Diego 'A' boat nosing out the Tritons by two-hundredths of a second for second place. The JV8+ will race tomorrow against Stanford, UC San Diego, Notre Dame and two boats from California.
“Overall, I'm really pleased with the efforts we had today,” head coach Steve Todd said. “I'd like to see the JV guys really take their experience today and move forward knowing they can win those battles.”
The Beavers' F8+ crew earned a spot in the grand final of the Men's Collegiate Novice Derek Guelker Memorial Cup by finishing second in heat 'B' Saturday morning. The Beavers “caught a crab” early in the race slowing the boat and were unable to catch the crew from California, but the OSU crew worked its way back into the race to finish second just 2.5 seconds behind UCSD.
The Beavers V8+ crew had a great race against a strong Michigan boat for second place. The Beavers kept close to the Wolverines throughout the 2,000-meter course before moving ahead for a two-second victory in heat 'A' of the Copley Cup.
Racing concludes at the San Diego Crew Classic on Sunday as the V8+ will compete in the Copley Cup grand final at 9:15 a.m. The JV8+ will race in the Sharp Cabrillo Cup grand final at 9:40, and the F8+ will finish the Beavers' weekend as they face off against crews from Cal and University of San Diego, Orange Coast College, UC San Diego and UC Santa Barbara in the grand final of the Derek Guelker Memorial Cup at 10:50 a.m. The race can be watched live online at www.crewclassic.org.
