LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Oregon State softball team fell to No. 7 UCLA Saturday night at Easton Stadium by a final score of 9-1 in six innings.
For the second game in a row the Beavers (16-10 overall, 0-2 Pacific-10 Conference) struck first. They loaded the bases two different times in the top half of the first and scored one run on a Desiree Beltran sacrifice fly to center field driving in Maggie Doremus who reached base on a fielder's choice. The Beavers made UCLA starting pitcher work in the first inning forcing three walks in the inning.
The Bruins (25-5, 2-0) came back with a quick three-run bottom of the first inning on a bases loaded ground out to short and a bases loaded two RBI double through the right side. The first ended with UCLA leading 3-1.
Oregon State starting pitcher Marina Demore faced just four batters in the first inning and recorded just one out before getting pulled for Paige Hall. She gave up three runs on one hit; she walked one and hit one.
Hall pitched 2.2 innings surrendering three runs on four hits while walking two and striking out two in the no decision.
The Bruins scored three more in the bottom of the third inning on a 2-run home run to left field and a RBI double with a runner coming all the way around from first to score to take a 6-1 lead through three innings.
The Beavers threatened with a runner on second in the top of the forth after Ally Kutz doubled to centerfield with two outs in the inning but they could not push the run across.
Demore reentered to pitch in the bottom of the fourth and walked two out of the first three batters she faced in the putting runners on first and second with one out. After a fly ball to short center chased down by Lea Cavestany, the next UCLA batter hit a towering foul ball just in front of the UCLA bench tracked down by Beltran for the final out of the inning.
The Bruins added another run in the fifth and then loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth before Demore got the first and second outs on consecutive fly balls to Doremus at second. UCLA's then got a walk forcing in its eighth run of the game before a wild pitch allowed the ninth and final run to score for the Bruins. The game ended 9-1 in six innings.
Demore pitched a total of three innings giving up six earned run while giving up seven walks and striking out two in a losing effort. She falls to 7-5 on the season. UCLA starter Jessica Hall pitched five complete innings and gave up only one run to improve to 14-4.
