STANFORD, Calif. - Maggie Doremus led the Beavers with two hits in the game but the Beavers fell to the No. 11 Cardinal Sunday afternoon at Smith Family Stadium by a final score of 3-1 in the series finale.
The Beavers (18-16 overall, 1-8 Pacific-10 Conference) got two hits in the top of the first but were unable to turn them into runs. The Cardinal picked up two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early 2-0 lead.
Stanford (30-8, 5-4) threatened in the bottom of the second with a runner on third with two outs but Oregon State starting pitcher Tina Andreana recorded her third strikeout of the game on a full count swinging strike to end the inning.
Oregon State added two more hits in the third but again could not bring the runners around to score. Maggie Doremus recorded her second hit in as many at bats and finished the day going 2-for-3. It was her second multiple hit performance this year.
Andreana shut down the Cardinal in order in the bottom of the third marking the first time in the series that the Cardinal did not have a runner reach base.
Desiree Beltran led off the top of the fourth with a double in the left center gap that ran all the way to the fence. Beltran was pinch ran for at second by Hanna Bouska who then moved to third on a passed ball. Audrey Roderfeld then drove in Bouska on a sacrifice fly to right center to get the Beavers on the board. The Cardinal led 2-1 going to the bottom of the fourth.
The Cardinal got a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fourth that was erased when the next batter grounded into a double play starting with Beltran at third for the first two outs. After the next batter double to left field, the inning ended with a popup to Doremus at second.
Ashley Sanchez got a leadoff single to center to get things going for the Beavers in the top of the fifth. After a failed sacrifice bunt attempt by Lea Cavestany, Doremus flew out to center for the second out of the inning. Erin Guzy then grounded out to her counterpart at first to end the inning.
The Cardinal got its first two runners on in the bottom of the fifth but then two consecutive fielder's choice outs at third gave the Cardinal runners on first and second with two outs. A single to center scored a run from second increasing the Cardinal lead to 3-1 before Andreana got a swinging strikeout, fifth of the game, to end the inning.
Stanford threatened to break the game wide open in the bottom of the sixth inning when it had the bases loaded and two outs but Andreana once again recorded a strikeout to end the Cardinal threat. The Beavers headed to the seventh inning trailing 3-1 but could not tie the game and fell to the Cardinal.
Andreana pitched a complete game and allowed three earned runs on seven hits. She walked four and struck out six. She falls to 5-7 on the season while Cardinal starter Teagan Gerhart improves to 16-6 with the win.
The Beavers next take the field on Thursday when they head to Eugene, Ore. to take on in state rival Oregon to start a three-game set.
