TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona took advantage of an uncharacteristic five errors by the 23rd-ranked Oregon State baseball team to take game one of the three-game series, 18-0, Friday night at Kindall Field.
The five errors were a season-high for the Beavers, who dropped to 18-7 this season and 0-1 in Pacific-10 Conference play. Arizona, meanwhile, improved to 20-7 overall and 2-2 in league play.
Arizona took the lead for good in the third. The Wildcats loaded the bases with two singles and an intentional walk with one out. Jett Bandy hit a grounder to third that skipped under the glove of Carter Bell for the Beavers' first error of the game, allowing two runs to score. An errant throw from Ryan Barnes on the play allowed the third run of the inning.
Robert Refsnyder later singled home Bandy, putting it at 4-0 in favor of Arizona after three full.
Arizona added to its lead with two runs in the fourth. Bandy singled home two but was thrown out on the play trying to stretch it into a double. Both runs were unearned due to an OSU error and passed ball.
The Wildcats capped off the game with a 12-run sixth, sending 18 batters to the plate.
Sam Gaviglio took his first loss of the season, dropping to 5-1. He allowed eight hits and 10 runs, of which only four were earned.
Kurt Heyer was the recipient of the run support from Arizona and picked up his fifth win of the season to improve to 5-1. He struck out nine and allowed five hits in a complete-game effort.
Andrew Susac was the lone Beaver with two hits; he has a team-leading 11 multi-hit efforts this season.
The Beavers failed to score in a game for the first time since May 19, 2008 in a 10-0 loss at Long Beach State. That snaps a streak of 139 consecutive games for the Beavers with at least one run scored.
Game two of the series between the Beavers and Wildcats is scheduled for 1 p.m. PT Saturday at Kindall Field.
