Corvallis, Ore. – Senior El Sara Greer (Waterloo, Iowa) broke the school record for blocked shots, earning her 88th of the season, and moved into the single season rebounds record books, but the Oregon State women's basketball team fell 59-54 on Saturday afternoon in legendary Gill Coliseum in the regular season finale in front of a crowd of 1,545.
”Going into the game, it was just like a regular game,” Greer said. “Just trying your best and trying to win. I was nervous of course because it was my last game, but nervous excited. So just ready to play. I don't think [breaking the school record for blocked shots] has set in yet. it will come pretty soon.” Greer tallied a team-high tying 13 points, adding four rebounds and a pair of assists, while freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) also earned 13 points with redshirt sophomore Sage Indendi (Livingston, Mont.) rounding out the players in double-figures with 12 points. The two teams were knotted up through most of the first half before the Beavers went on a 12-3 run, holding Arizona State to only free throws for over five minutes of play to take the largest lead of the game at 19-12 behind five points by both Martin and Indendi. Arizona State (19-9, 11-7) answered with a 15-3 run to earn its largest lead of the game at 29-22, but Oregon State (9-20, 2-16) was able to cut the lead to just four at 29-25 with freshman Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) and Greer earning three points from the charity stripe.
Junior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) hit the final shot of the first half to make it 31-27 in favor of Arizona State, matching Arizona State's Janae Fulcher's jumper to score her first points of the game.
The Sun Devils doubled Oregon State's points to open the second half to build their lead back up to seven at 37-30 heading into the first media timeout with 15:36 left to play.
But Greer quickly cut Arizona State's lead back to four on three straight points out of the break to reach double-digits for the 13th time this season.
Marchbanks hit a three-pointer from the right corner with Arizona State unable to transition back on defense to make it a one-possession game at 38-36, but the Sun Devils scored five straight points to make it 43-36 with 10:53 left.
The Beavers scored their next four points from the free throw line until Indendi hit her second three-pointer of the game, cutting the Sun Devil lead down to two again at 45-43. Marchbanks matched Arizona State's Kimberly Brandon's pair of points with a couple more of her own from the free throw line to keep it a two-point game.
Five more trips to the line for the Beavers produced seven more points to make it 55-54 with 32.5 seconds remaining, fouling the Sun Devils' Tenaya Watson, converting on both to make it a three-point game.
A pair of missed three-point attempts with under 25 seconds remaining by Oregon State sent Watson back to the line, hitting both to seal the decision for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State's Brandon led all scorers with 15 points, while Watson added 14.
The Beavers shot41.7 percent (15-36) from the field and converted a season-high tying 20 free throws, while Arizona State shot 45.8 percent (22-48) overall.
