CORVALLIS, Ore. - They say all good things must come to an end. For Oregon State right-hander Sam Gaviglio, that came after 41 2/3 innings.
The junior allowed a two-out run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning Friday night, snapping his scoreless innings streak at 41 2/3 innings. But that didn't hinder him from winning his fifth game of the season as the 23rd-ranked Beavers defeated UC Santa Barbara, 6-3, in front of 1,786 fans at Goss Stadium.
"That was a great run by Sam and I'm proud of the effort he has had thus far this season," Oregon State head coach Pat Casey said. "Our defense has done a great job throughout the season in backing him up in his great outings as that was the case this game. Even though the streak ended, Sam had an outstanding effort Friday night."
Gaviglio allowed the sac fly off the bat of Ryan Palermo, a lined shot to left caught at the warning track by Ryan Barnes. It was his first earned run allowed during his 2011 campaign.
Gaviglio did allow a second earned run, in the sixth, when Trevor Whyte singled to right field.
Through six games this season, Gaviglio has a 5-0 record and 0.39 earned run average in 46 1/3 innings. He struck out 11 - his third game of 10 or more this season - and has totaled 51 to just six walks.
Gaviglio's 41 2/3 innings is the longest scoreless innings streak since the Pacific-10 Conference added Arizona and Arizona State in 1978. It's also the longest streak for the Beavers since the aluminum bat era began - Ken Forsch is reported to have thrown 45 scoreless innings in 1968.
Offensively, the Beavers n(17-5 overall) pelted nine hits off six UC Santa Barbara (10-7) pitchers, including six off starter Jesse Meaux, who dropped to 2-2 this season.
Jared Norrsi went 2-for-4 with a double, driving in two. He singled home his first run in the fourth, tying the score at one apiece, and doubled home the team's sixth run of the game in the seventh. It marked his second consecutive game with two hits.
Carter Bell also had a two-hit effort, his fifth multiple-hit effort of the season. He singled in the fifth and doubled in the sixth, scoring after both.
Oregon State loaded the bases on a single, hit by pitch and single in the fifth, and with the game tied, 1-1. Ryan Barnes walked with the bases loaded to give OSU a 2-1 lead.
The next batter, Danny Hayes, extended his hit streak to six games by stroking a sacrifice fly to right, giving the Beavers a 3-1 advantage.
OSU ended the inning's scoring when Andrew Susac drove in his 21st run of the season with a bloop single to center.
Ryan Dunn added to the OSU's output with a safety squeeze with a 4-2 lead in the fifth, driving in Bell.
Whyte and Lance Roenicke led UC Santa Barbara with two hits apiece; the Gauchos managed eight hits off Gaviglio and reliever Tony Bryant.
Oregon State and UC Santa Barbara continue their three-game series Saturday at Goss Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. PT.
