Brenner Blasts a Grand Slam as Beavers Sweep Aggies

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Junior Mary Claire Brenner drove in seven runners including four coming off a grand slam home run as the Beavers swept Utah State in a doubleheader Saturday at the OSU Softball Complex. The Beavers won the first game, 9-0, in five innings and completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory in the second game.
Brenner went 4-for-5 on the day with a run scored and the seven RBIs to lead the Beavers in the sweep Saturday. Maggie Doremus went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs and Erin Guzy went 3-for-7 with three runs scored and three RBIs on the day.
Marina Demore started the first game and came in relief in the second to pitch a total of 9 1/3 innings while giving up five hits, no earned runs, four walks and striking out 16 as she picked up both wins on the day improving her record to 7-4.
Game 1 - Oregon State 9, Utah State 0
After a scoreless first inning, Oregon State got on the board with two runs in the bottom of the second to take an early 2-0 lead.
Paige Hall walked to start the inning and then moved to third base on a groundout by Guzy and a wild pitch. Brenner was then hit by a pitch from Aggie starting pitcher Mandy Harmon. Desiree Beltran then drove in Hall from third base on an error by the shortstop advancing Brenner to second. After Brenner was thrown out at third on a fielder's choice, Doremus walked loading the bases. Beltran then scored on a throwing error by the Aggie catcher giving the Beavers the 2-0 advantage.
The Beavers added seven runs in the bottom of the third inning that started with Guzy diving in two runners with a double over the left fielder's head. Brenner singled up the middle driving in a run. Catcher Ally Kutz drove in a run after being walked with the bases loaded and then Doremus doubled to left field with the bases loaded scoring three to give Oregon State a 9-0 lead.
With the 9-0 lead going to the top of the fourth inning, Oregon State starter Demore took over. She struck out two in the fourth and another in the top of the fifth to shutout the Aggies. It was Demore's third consecutive complete game and second complete game shutout of the season. Aggies starter Mandy Harmon fell to 4-14 on the season with the loss.
Guzy was 1-for-3 in the game with a run scored and two RBIs while Doremus went 1-for-1 with her three RBI double and a walk.
Game 2 - Oregon State 8, Utah State 1
The Aggies (5-21 overall) struck first in the second game of the day with a run in the top of the second inning after getting runners on second and third with one out, Tatem Day drove in the run from third with a single to left field but then tried to advance to second when the ball came into third base trying to get the runner advancing to third from second. Oregon State third baseman Beltran then threw Day out at second with Doremus applying the tag. The runner at third then tried to score but was gunned down by Doremus at the plate for the third and final out of the inning.
With the Aggies up by one run going to the bottom of the fourth, Kutz doubled down the left field line scoring pinch runner Kilee Lippencott from second tying the game at 1-1.
The Beavers (10-8) added five more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. After Lea Cavestany walked and Doremus singled on a bunt, Guzy singled up the middle scoring Cavestany from second. After Hall walked to load the bases, Brenner stepped up and blasted her second home run of the season driving in four runs on the grand slam to left center field. Brenner drove in two more in the bottom of the sixth on a single to center field giving her six RBIs in the game.
Sophomore Tina Andreana started the game for the Beavers and went 2 2/3 innings giving up three hits and one earned run before being relieved by Demore who finished out the game. Demore gave up only two hits the rest of the game while striking out seven. Aggie starter Shelbi Tyteca went six innings giving up seven earned runs on 10 hits to fall to 1-3.
Notes: Kilee Lippencott's at bat in the first game was her first plate appearance of the season ... Mary Claire Brenner's home run was her second of the season ... Brenner's grand slam was the first by an Oregon State hitter since Audrey Roderfeld hit one against Oregon last season ... Brenner was 3-for-4 in the second game which ties the most hits in a game by any hitter this season ... Brenner's six RBIs in the second game is the most by any Oregon State hitter this season ... The two wins Saturday gives the Beavers 10 wins on the season.
