Softball Splits Day One at Husky Softball Classic

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Oregon State softball team split its first day at the Husky Softball Classic by falling to USC Upstate by a 2-1 final and then defeating Seattle University by a score of 5-3 in eight innings.
USC Upstate - Game 1 - USC Upstate 2, Oregon State 1
Oregon State starting pitcher Marina Demore pitched seven complete innings allowed only one earned run on two hits while striking out 11 Spartans but the Beavers could not overcome a late seventh inning home run and fell, 2-1, Friday afternoon.
Demore took care of the Spartans in the top of the first with two strikeouts and a groundout. The Beavers took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Centerfielder Lea Cavestany led off the game for the Beavers with a walk. She then stole second and moved to third after an illegal pitch. Starting designated player Paige Hall came up with two outs and Cavestany on third and blasted a double to left-center field scoring Cavestany.
The Beavers (7-8 overall) got runners at first and second in the second inning but could not add another run. They loaded the bases in the fourth with one out and could not get the timely hit they needed to put more runs on the board. Oregon State left seven runners on base in the game, five in scoring position.
USC Upstate's leadoff hitter in the seventh inning reached on an error by the Beavers right fielder and then advanced to second on the play. After a pinch runner, Lauren Quevedo hit a 2-run home run to left field giving the Spartans (25-0) the 2-1 final score.
Demore fell to 5-4 on the season while USC Upstate's starting pitcher Morgan Childers improved to 18-0 on the season. Hall was 2-for-3 in the game with the Beavers lone RBI.
Seattle University - Game 2 - Oregon State 5, Seattle 2 (8 Innings)
Oregon State starter Tina Andreana pitched 7 2/3 innings allowing only one hit, striking out nine batters and walking only two to improving her record to 2-2 on the season.
There was nothing doing for either team until Seattle University (1-16) broke through with two runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Hall came in relief of Andreana to start the bottom of the sixth and quickly gave up two runs on a single and a home run while only getting one out in the inning. Andreana reentered the game following the home run and quickly got two ground outs to end the inning.
The Beavers (8-8) quickly tied the game at, 2-2, with two runs in the top of the seventh inning. Erin Guzy doubled down the left field line and was pinch run for by Isabelle Batayola. Batayola advanced to third after Mary Claire Brenner got a pinch hit single. Emily Richardson reentered to run for Brenner and following a Seattle pitching change, Desiree Beltran singled to right field moving Richardson to third and scoring Batayola for the Beavers' first run of the game. Maggie Doremus reached on an error by the pitcher scoring Richardson and tying the game at 2-2.
After Andreana shut down Seattle in the bottom of the seventh, the Beavers started with Demore, pinch running for Hall, at second in the eighth inning. Demore was immediately moved to third by sacrifice bunt by Ally Kutz. Audrey Roderfeld picked up her fifth RBI of the season when she singled to center field scoring Demore from third base. Erin Guzy then singled to center moving Roderfeld to second. Emily Richardson reached on a fielder's choice with Guzy getting put out at second and Roderfeld moving to third. Richardson then stole second and advanced to third with Roderfeld scoring from third on the play on an error by the catcher. Nikki Chandler then drove in Richardson from third giving the Beavers a 5-3 lead going into the bottom of the eighth inning.
After a Seattle runner was placed at second to start the bottom of the eighth, Andreana struck out the first batter of the inning swinging. The next batter reached on an error by the Beavers' left fielder and advanced to second on the play. Seattle had runners on second and third when Andreana struck out her second batter of the inning for the second out. The next batter walked to load the bases with two outs and the winning-run at the plate. Andreana then struck out the final batter of the game to secure the 5-2 win for the Beavers.
The Beavers are back in action Saturday morning when they play Portland State at 9 a.m. and USC Upstate at 11 a.m. in the final day of the Husky Softball Classic in Seattle, Wash.
Notes: Emily Richardson got her first career start in the game against Seattle ... Starting pitcher Marina Demore (11) and Tina Andreana (9) struck out a combined 20 batters on the day ... Tina Andreana lowered her season ERA to 1.86 ... Marina Demore struck out a team best 11 batters against USC Upstate.
