PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The Oregon State softball team dropped a heartbreaker to No. 1/3 Georgia Friday afternoon by a final score of 12-7. The contest that lasted nearly three hours was an up and down, back and forth affair at the Cathedral City Classic.
Oregon State (5-2 overall) found itself playing catch-up the entire game after Georgia jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a grand slam home run which chased Oregon State starting pitcher Marina Demore from the game.
Oregon State came right back with three runs of its own in the bottom half of the second inning when junior Paige Hall blasted her first home run of the season and first of two in the ball game. After Mary Claire Brenner singled and then advanced to second on a wild pitch, she scored on a Nikki Chandler single to right field.
The Beavers added another run in the second inning when senior Audrey Roderfeld, pinch hitting, reached on an error by the Georgia shortstop with the bases loaded scoring Chandler bringing the Georgia lead to 4-3.
Georgia (13-1) added two more runs in the top of the fourth on a 2-run home run but Oregon State bounced right back in the bottom half of the inning with two runs of its own on a Lea Cavestany double that scored Maggie Doremus and Chandler.
Georgia added three more in the top of the fifth on another 2-run home run and an RBI groundout but once again the Beavers answered the call- in the bottom off the inning with runs of their own.
The Beavers added a run on Paige Hall's second home run of the day, this one coming as she led off the fifth inning. Roderfeld came to the plate later in the inning with the bases loaded and once again hit the ball hard to third base where the Georgia fielder could not come up with it cleanly for another error allowing Ally Kutz to score cutting the Georgia lead to 9-7.
It was nothing doing in the sixth inning but in the top of the seventh Georgia tacked on three more runs to give them the final advantage of 12-7.
Hall went 2-for-4 in the game with two home runs, two RBIs and two runs scored. Cavestany and Kutz both were 2-for-4 in the game while Doremus went 2-for-3 with one run scored.
Doremus dropped her record to 4-2 on the season. Georgia pitcher Erin Arevalo got the win moving to 2-0 on the season and Alison Owen recorded her second save of the year.
Notes: Junior Paige Hall hit her first home run of the season ... Hall is the first Oregon State player to hit two home runs in a single game this season.
