The sixth-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team hit its first 23 routines and tied its second highest score of the season to win at the 31st annual Salbasgeon Suites Invitational. The Beavers' final tally of 196.675 topped No. 11 Washington (195.725), San Jose State (193.050) and UC Davis (192.950). Junior Leslie Mak led the Beavers winning individual titles on the uneven bars and balance beam as well as in the all-around just missing her career-high at 39.425.
"It was good to get to compete at home in front of our fans, it's been a while," head coach Tanya Chaplin said. "With the bye week, we've been looking forward to getting back to competition and we've really been looking forward to returning to Gill. We had a lot of really good performances out there tonight and the work we've put in the past two weeks on correcting details showed tonight. We had a lot of stuck landings and we've really emphasized that lately too. It's a nice performance to have behind us now as we continue to prepare for the postseason."
Oregon State opened the meet with a flourish on the vault establishing the early lead over Washington 49.250-49.025. Sophomore Kelsi Blalock scored 9.875 to tie her career-high. Senior Becky Colvin added an identical score as the pair set up freshman Britney Ranzy, who tied her personal best with a 9.925 to win the event title and tally the highest score of the meet. The Beavers' team score of 49.250 is their second-highest of the season.
In the second rotation, junior Stephanie McGregor led off with a fantastic routine to set a career-high on the bars with a 9.875. The rest of the Beavers' lineup, which ranks No. 2 in the nation on the event, poured it on with all six gymnasts scoring 9.80 or higher. Brittany Harris and Jen Kesler followed with matching 9.80's before Makayla Stambaugh earned a 9.875. Mak performed a near-flawless routine and was awarded a 9.90, which won the individual title. Olivia Vivian, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation on the bars, performed beautiful routine but a small step on her landing left her with a 9.875.
The Beavers had opened their lead to nearly a full point at 98.575- 97.625 over the Huskies as they headed to the third rotation and the balance beam. Beam scores were hard to come by throughout the evening but the Beavers still managed to achieve a team score of 49.000, a feat the Beavers accomplished on all four events for the second time in 2011. Oregon State gymnasts posted the top five scores of the night with Blalock scoring 9.75, Harris and Kesler notching a pair of 9.775's, Vivian earning 9.80 and Mak finishing the rotation with a meet-high 9.90 to win the event title.
In the final stanza, OSU expanded its lead on the floor exercise as the front end of the lineup was on fire. Blalock opened the rotation with a 9.775, followed by Vivian's 9.825 and Mak's 9.85. Melanie Jones ignited the crowd of 3,652 with a fabulous routine and a score of 9.90. However, an out-of-bounds deduction for Stambaugh and a fall by Ranzy left the Beavers at 49.100 on the event.
