Corvallis, Ore. – Sophomore Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) broke the school record for most digs in a single season with 21 in the match, 488 this season, on Senior Night for Dre Shaw (Wailuku, Hawai'i), but the Beavers fell in four (17-25, 25-18, 16-25, 18-25) to No. 1 UCLA on Saturday evening.
“Two good nights of effort against two great teams,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “UCLA is a very good team, and they aren't going to go away. We served the ball tough – Camille [Saxton] and Arica [Nassar] served it tough. I love the progress of our team, but it's still about getting to the NCAA Tournament and winning. We're on a steady improvement.”
Shaw added eight kills to junior Camille Saxton's (Balzac, Alberta) team-high 16, 14 digs and two aces. Freshman Arica Nassar (Menifee, Calif.) earned 11, hitting a match-high .409, with seven of the team's 11 total blocks.
The Beavers (14-14, 6-12 Pac-12) forced seven tie scores through the first set, but the Bruin block and unforced errors left Oregon State just short with UCLA (23-4, 16-3 Pac-12) earning the early 1-0 lead.
But that all changed in the second set. The Beavers led by as many as four a couple of times, but the Bruins were able to tie up again twice. But a final push behind the serving of McBride and Defoe wrapped up the match in favor of Oregon State with the team going on a 4-0 run to end the set to make it an even match.
UCLA regained the lead in the third, and despite an early fourth set lead, the Beavers were unable to hold on as the Bruins closed the set out to take the match.
UCLA was led by Rachael Kidders' 18 kills. Libero Lainey Gera earned 21 digs.
Oregon State heads to the Bay Area next, facing No. 5 California on Friday at 7:00 p.m. Haas Pavilion.
