Women's Rowing Races To Pair of Second-Place Finishes at Portland Fall Classic

VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Oregon State women's rowing team entered one boat in each of the Varsity 8+ and JV 8+ races at the Portland Fall Classic, with both earning second place finishes on the 5,000-meter course at Vancouver Lake on Sunday.
"Overall it was a solid day on the course," Oregon State head coach Emily Ford said. "The `A' boat was strong from start to finish and I felt proud of their efforts today. The `B' boat struggled to find a rhythm together, but I felt they did a lot of things well."
In the Varsity 8+ race, Oregon State's `A' boat of Bonnie Chilibeck (coxswain), Nicole Hook, Gillian Cooper, Andrea Harvey, Amy McKee, Hilary Polis, Leslie Greer, Melissa Sloan and Karly Laney finished just seven seconds behind Washington State with a time of 18:11.04.
The Beavers' entry in the JV 8+ of Jenna Schardt (coxswain), Leslie Urban, Katie Zimmerman, Agne Pack, Lauren Morgenthaler, Alexa Ortiz, Beth Lewis, Sara Orofino and Tina Vernazza finished in 19:00.85, good enough for second place.
"It was great to see some of our formidable Northwest competitors and to get an idea of where we are in comparison to start the season," Ford said. "We are on a good track and we'll be looking forward to some more great racing in the spring."
The Classic, which was forced to relocate this year from its traditional location on the Willamette River in Portland due to the construction of a light rail bridge, was organized as a 5,000-meter head race with crews starting every 15 seconds and racing against the clock. The course ran counterclockwise around Vancouver Lake.
