VANCOUVER, Wash. - The Oregon State men's crew team claimed victories in three out of the four events in which it entered boats at the Portland Fall Classic on Sunday. The Beavers won the Varsity 8+, Varsity 4+ and JV 4+ races and finished in second in the JV 8+.
"Today was a good start to our fall races," Oregon State head coach Steve Todd said. "Our varsity guys performed well in the eight and then in the afternoon they put together a really great race in the four."
OSU started fast right out of the gate, winning the first race of the event, the Varsity 8+ with a time of 16:16.49. The boat of Dan Thompson (coxswain), Bryce Fransen, Clayton Ward, Wyatt Worrel, Ross Ellingwood, Chris Gannon, Etienne Mullin, Andrew Read and Chris Nofziger finished 15 seconds ahead of second-place Gonzaga.
In the afternoon, the Beavers swept the Varsity 4+ and JV 4+ races. The varsity boat of Dan Thompson (coxswain), Bryce Fransen, Ross Ellingwood, Clayton Ward and Wyatt Worrel finished the 5,000-meter course in 18:02.56, nearly a minute ahead of the time put forth by Lewis and Clark, which came in second place. Oregon State's second entry in the varsity race finished in third place with a time of 19:02.36.
OSU took the top three spots in the JV 4+ race, with Sam Callen (coxswain), Ty Louis, Lacy Phelps, Brad Buser and Julian Dansk taking first with a time of 19:14.78.
"The Portland Fall Classic delivered another great day of racing," Todd said. "The temporary move to Vancouver Lake served as a good venue to get a lot of Northwest teams racing."
The Classic, which was forced to relocate this year from its traditional location on the Willamette River in Portland due to the construction of a light rail bridge, was organized as a 5,000-meter head race with crews starting every 15 seconds and racing against the clock. The course ran counterclockwise around Vancouver Lake.
The team will be in action next Sunday for the final time before the spring when it heads to Seattle, Wash. to participate in the Head of the Lake.
