LOWELL, Ore. - The Oregon State men's crew team opened its 2012 slate with a win in the varsity eight over the University of Victoria on Saturday morning at Dexter Lake in Lowell, Ore. The Beavers finished in second in the freshman eight and varsity four races in their successful start to the season.
"Overall the Beavers had a good day out at Dexter Lake," Head Coach Steve Todd said. "We had a little bit of windy conditions, but the rain held off and we got the first race of the 2012 season under our belt."
Oregon State's varsity 8 of Dan Thompson (coxswain), Ross Ellingwood, Clayton Ward, Daniel Werner, Wyatt Worrel, Jorgen Anderson, Bryce Fransen, Brad Buser and Chris Nofziger finished the course in 5:58.7, topping Victoria (6:06.6) by eight seconds.
"The varsity eight race went very well," Todd said. "I think the guys came out excited to race for the first time this season. They had a really high energy level today and went after the race with a lot of gusto. They were maybe a little bit high and a little too excited during portions, but they settled down, got long, got into their race and came away with a good victory over the University of Victoria."
In the freshman 8+ race, OSU's entry finished in a close second behind Victoria. The Beavers crossed in 6:12.4 to the Vikes 6:09.8.
"The freshmen took this race as a real discovery," Todd said of his newcomers. "They're still really young and are learning how to race. They get another crack at the University of Victoria later in the season so we hope they take away something from the day, learn a little bit about how to race and really be competitive."
Oregon State had three entries in the varsity 4+ race and had a great battle between its `A' and freshmen boats. Victoria took V4+ crown with a time of 6:50.2. The Beavers took the next three spots with OSU A finishing in 6:58.7, the freshmen in 6:59.8 and OSU B in 7:13.9.
"We had a really tight race between our `A' 4 and freshman 4," Todd commented. "I think the freshmen did a really great job of racing today and stayed really competitive with the varsity four."
The teams raced on Dexter Lake's 2,000-meter course that begins at the covered bridge on the east side of the lake running down two full buoyed lines northwest towards the OAR boathouse for the finish line.
OSU will have just about a month off before they host more races, this time in Vancouver, Wash., against Gonzaga and Stanford on April 10.
