SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Oregon State women's soccer team lost to the Utah Utes today in a heartbreaking overtime defeat where the Pilots scored in the second minute of the first overtime period to win 1-0.
The Beavers and the Utes played a close first half where Utah had four shots and Oregon State had three. The first half was also a physical battle for the two teams with twelve total fouls.
"The first half for us, we didn't play our best soccer," head coach Linus Rhode said. "I think because of that the game was fairly even. There weren't a lot of shots for either team. We didn't play up to our potential in the first half."
Oregon State had several chances during the first half. Jacy Drobney got the first crack at goal for the Beavers when she sent a shot towards goal in the ninth minute, but the Utah goalkeeper was there to make the save. Jenna Richardson had another chance for the Beavers when she took a shot in the 23rd minute, but the Utah goalkeeper was there to stop the Beavers again.
Beaver goalkeeper Colleen Boyd came up big in the first half coming away with two saves. The Utes took two dangerous shots on goal in the ninth and 21st minutes, but Boyd was there to keep the game tied 0-0 going into halftime.
"The back four and Colleen played outstanding today," Rhode said. "They did a very good job for most of the game, and they really didn't give up any good opportunities for Utah."
The Beavers outshot Utah 10-3 in the second half and made the Utah goalkeeper come up with three big saves. The second half was another physical battle between the two teams with 11 total fouls.
Oregon State came out of halftime and wasted no time getting shots on goal. Brandi Dawson had an opportunity in the 51st minute when she headed the ball just over the crossbar off a corner kick from Megan Miller.
"In the second half, we turned it around and I thought we played really well and created a lot of chances," Rhode said. "We had some close calls where the ball got cleared off the line and obviously it didn't bounce our way."
The Beavers tried to get on the scoreboard with just minutes left in regulation when Melinda Ingalls took a shot in the 87th minute, but the Utah goalkeeper was there to make the save to send the game into overtime.
Utah scored in the second minute of overtime to win the game. The Beavers are now 10-4-1 on the season and 4-2 in Pac-12 Conference play.
"Unfortunately, we gave up a goal off a set piece, so it is always a tough way to lose in overtime," Rhode said. "But I think we can take something away from this game and build for the games coming up."
The Oregon State women's soccer team will return to action Friday Oct. 21 when they host Washington State at 7:30 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.
