CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 23 Oregon State women's soccer team came away with a win tonight after defeating No. 21 Washington State 2-1 under the lights at Paul Lorenz Field. The Beavers improved its record to 11-4-1 and the Cougars fell to 10-5-2.
“Last week against Utah we came out slow in the first half, so one of our main objectives was to come out tonight firing and really get after it,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “We played some really good soccer on both sides of the ball and we are very happy with the result.”
The Beavers struck first and early in the first half when Ashley Folsom scored her second goal of the season in the seventh minute of the game. After Oregon State was awarded a cornerkick, Jacy Drobney sent a cross into the box and Folsom was able to flick the ball past the keeper into the back of the net.
Chelsea Buckland added to the scoreboard in the 34th minute of the game to make the score 2-0 Beavers. Justyne Freud sent a free-kick into the box and Buckland was able to finish it off for her seventh goal of the season.
Oregon State outshot the Cougars 8-2 in the first half. The first half was also another physical half for the Beavers with 11 total fouls and three yellow cards between the two teams.
“The Pac-12 is a physical conference and obviously the Cougars were coming out to battle and that is what they brought to the table and we had to be ready for that,” Rhode said.
The Beavers had two great opportunities in the second half with a shot from Jenne Richardson in the 48th minute and a shot from Buckland in the 61st minute, but both shots went just wide of the post.
Washington State got on the board after the referee called a foul in the Beaver 18-yard box, which awarded a penalty kick to the Cougars. Jocelyn Jeffers converted the PK and the score changed to 2-1 with 17 minutes left in the second half.
“The referee made a call and it was probably questionable,” Rhode said. “I know our defender probably went for the ball.”
Colleen Boyd and the back line played a strong game and kept the Cougar offense contained for the majority of the game. Boyd finished with three saves and the Beavers outshot Washington State 6-5 in the second half.
This game marked the first home game that the Beavers have played since September 23 when they defeated Colorado 2-0. “Being on the road for that long is very difficult,” Rhode said. “It is always great being here and playing in front of the home fans was and I am just happy that we played well and got the result.”
The Beavers will return to action Sunday Oct. 23 against the Washington Huskies. The game is set to kick-off at 12:00 p.m. at Paul Lorenz Field.
