Corvallis, Ore. – Senior El Sara Greer (Waterloo, Iowa) earned a career-high seven blocked shots to move to fourth all-time on the single season list, but the Oregon State women's basketball team (7-12, 0-8 Pac-10) fell to California (12-7, 4-4 Pac-10) on Thursday evening in legendary Gill Coliseum.
On the offensive front, junior Earlysia Marchbanks (Salem, Ore.) and freshman Alyssa Martin (Portland, Ore.) each reached double-digits for points with 13 and 10, respectively. Marchbanks, Greer and sophomore Angela Misa (Oceanside, Calif.) led the rebounding effort with five each.
California opened up with a quick 5-0 lead that Oregon State quickly erased it behind buckets by Marchbanks and Martin, taking a slim two-point lead on made free throws by freshman Alexis Bostick (Oakland, Calif.) to give the Beavers their first lead at 7-5 with just under 17 minutes to play.
But the Golden Bears answered back in the form of DeNesha Stallworth with 11 points, scoring 22 of their 30 total points at the half in the paint with the other five coming from a Layshia Clarendon three-pointer and three more coming from the charity stripe.
The Beavers forced 11 turnovers, counting nine steals, led by Misa off the bench. But Oregon State was unable to convert, tallying only five field goals in the first half, but hitting a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
Marchbanks opened the second half with the Beavers' first five points, but Cal matched the points in back-to-back possessions.
The Golden Bears went on a small run in the middle of the second half before the Beavers scored 13 points to Cal's four to narrow the gap to an 11 point game at 56-45 with just over three minutes to play.
But Oregon State was forced to foul to stop the clock with California able to earn four more points in the final two minutes to clinch the win.
California's Stallworth led all scorers with 16 points, adding 10 rebounds. Talia Caldwell also added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
The Beavers outshot the Golden Bears 46.2 percent (12-26) to 36.4 percent (12-33) in the second half, rebounding from an 18.5 percent first half (5-27). Oregon State was perfect from the line for the first time this season, hitting all eight free throws.
