
Volleyball Upends UNLV

Corvallis, Ore. - Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba), sophomore Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) and freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) combined for 42 of the Oregon State volleyball team's 62 kills in Saturday afternoon's four-set win over UNLV (1-4). Set scores were 25-19, 30-28, 21-25, 22-25.
"It was a hard fought win," head Taras Liskevych said. "We had them down and out, and then they adjusted. We gave them life. They certainly had us in set two, which was key to the match. Kaitlan [Locke] did a great job in the fourth set with ending the match. Mona [Kressl] is hitting very well, and Jill [Sawatzky] is doing well all-around."
Sawatzky killed a match-high 18 balls, while Saxton had 14 kills and Kressl added 10, hitting .562 with only one attack error. Freshman Kelsey Zimmernan (Bend, Ore.) added seven off the bench in her three sets played.
Sophomore Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) chalked up her second double-double of the season with 44 assists and 10 digs, adding five kills and four blocks. Sophomore Alyssa O'Neil (West Linn, Ore.) scored half of the team's eight service aces.
Defensively, freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) posted a team-high 14 digs, while sophomore Tami Brown (Eugene, Ore.) led all defense at the net with six blocks. Sawatzky and sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) both had four blocks each.
Oregon State got off to a strong start, easily taking set one. But the Beavers fell behind in the middle of the second set by as much as seven at the 11-18 mark, but battled back to take a 2-0 lead in a 30-28 victory. After dropping the third set, Oregon State rallied to take the match in the final points of the fourth set.
UNLV's offense was paced by Sara Nehf with 17 kills. Libero Kela Lau Hee dug a match-high 16 balls.
