Corvallis, Ore. – Despite a balanced attack by the Oregon State volleyball team (7-8, 0-1 Pac-10), the Beavers dropped their Pac-10 opener to No. 7 Washington (12-0, 1-0 Pac-10) on Friday evening in set scores of 20-25, 23-25, 16-25 in front of a crowd of 1,548.
“Washington's a very good team,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “We needed to contest and side out like we did in the second set. We as a team needed to pass and dig the ball better tonight. We really gave up a lot of points and needed a better performance from our outside hitters tonight.”
Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) and sophomore Megan McBride (Auburn, Wash.) both racked up seven kills, while sophomore Alyssa O'Neil (West Linn, Ore.) and freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) earned 10 digs each.
Oregon State took an early lead, widening the gap to as many as three at two different points in the first set. But three plays overturned by the officials and a handful of unforced errors by the Beavers gave the Huskies the early 1-0 advantage.
Heading into the second set, the two teams exchanged nine lead changes and 16 tie scores. Momentum shifted between the two teams as both burned each of their timeouts by the 20-point mark. With the set tied at 23 all, the Beavers were unable to get a timely kill before a Washington kill put the set away. Oregon State scored their points on only nine kills, capitalizing on nine Washington unforced errors.
But coming out of the break, the Beavers struggled to find an offensive rhythm as Washington took the third set.
The Huskies' Kindra Carlson led all hitters with 13 kills, while libero Jenna Orlandini dug a match-high 18 balls.
Oregon State completes the weekend against Washington State on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. in legendary Gill Coliseum.
