Davis, Calif. – Sophomore Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) was the lone Oregon State volleyball player to reach double digits in kills with 10 in the Beavers (7-7) sweep of Nevada (6-6) on Saturday afternoon in the teams' final match of the Aggie Invitational.
“It was good to end this tournament with a victory,” head coach Taras Liskevych said. “I thought our blocking was good in this match, and we sided out well. I thought Mona [Kressl] had a really good blocking display. Now it's on to the Pac-10. We know we can play with anyone in the country, we just have to be consistent throughout an entire match – that's key for us. It was good to integrate Dre [Shaw] into our team this weekend, and hopefully we will get our other players back soon.”
Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) was the lone Beaver to be named to the All-Tournament Team. She earned seven kills with nine digs and three blocks in the win.
Oregon State capitalized on 11 Nevada unforced errors as it cruised to a 25-14 win in the opening set. The Beavers racked up 11 kills as a team, led by Sawatzky and sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) with three kills each, but only counting six assists as they earned five kills on Wolf Pack overpasses.
Saxton had big swings for the Beavers in the second set as the momentum carried over, resulting in an easy 25-16 win. Freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) racked up five blocks, while Sawatzky and Saxton added a block solo each and a combined three block assists.
Coming out of the break, the Beavers fell behind early, allowing Nevada to gain a lead of as much as three at 3-6. But behind a long string of serving by freshman Becky Defoe (Bend, Ore.) and Saxton, the team regained the lead after being tied at nine all. Kressl had three kills of her seven total after that point, including the match-winning shot.
Defoe led the backcourt defense with a team-high 11 digs, while Kressl's seven blocks paced the defense at the net.
Nevada's Lindsay Baldwin killed a team-high eight balls, while libero Nicole Link had a match-high 14 digs.
Oregon State opens up Pac-10 play on Friday against No. 9 Washington in legendary Gill Coliseum at 7:00 p.m.
Oregon State Notes – Senior Jill Sawatzky is now sixth all-time for career kills with 1,258.
