Charleston, S.C. - Sophomore Camille Saxton (Balzac, Alberta) recorded her second career double-double with 10 kills and 10 digs in Oregon State volleyball's (4-5) four-set win over Cincinnati (7-3) on Saturday morning. Set scores were 25-21, 25-23, 17-25, 25-18.
"Here's the difference from yesterday to today - outstanding blocking performance," head coach Taras Liskevych said. "Jill [Sawatzky] really did a great job blocking. And as a team, we completely turned around our serving - nine aces will win the battle every time. Great serving today by Camille [Saxton] with five aces and no errors. I think it's gutsy for us to have lost a tough match yesterday and come back to beat a quality team today like Cincinnati."
Senior Jill Sawatzky (St. Andrews, Manitoba) killed 18 balls and was just one dig shy of her second double-double of the weekend. She added a match-high nine blocks with two solo blocks and nine block assists. Sophomore Ashley Eneliko (Seattle, Wash.) and freshman Mona Kressl (Langenzenn, Germany) were close behind with eight blocks each.
Oregon State started the first set going on short runs but holding Cincinnati to mostly sideout points to take the early lead at the 3-2 mark. The Beavers collected seven and a half blocks in the set alone with Kressl tallying five with four others with two each. After a questionable line judge call on Sawatzky's attack, Sawatzky put the set away in favor of the Beavers with the next ball.
The Beavers took the 2-0 lead, but after 11 tie scores and five lead changes. The final tie came at 23 all, but a Sawatzky kill and another block by Eneliko and Saxton put the set away. The Beavers racked up six more team blocks in the set win with Sawatzky adding six kills.
Cincinnati took the third set after hitting nearly errorless with 12 kills, but Oregon State came back in the fourth set taking control early. Five kills by Sawatzky and three by Saxton of the team's 12 in the final set, plus four more team blocks put the match away in favor of the Beavers.
Cincinnati's Stephanie Niemer paced the Bearcats' offense with 18 kills, and libero Emily MacIntyre dug a match-high 17 balls.
Oregon State wraps up play in the Holiday Inn Classic at 4:30 p.m. PT against host, College of Charleston.
