Men's Crew Wins at Portland Fall Classic

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Oregon State men's rowing team got its fall season started Sunday morning as the Beavers swept the competition at the Portland Fall Classic.
"The guys were really excited to race this week," head coach Steve Todd said. "To finally get out and compete against someone else is what they were looking for."
The Beavers' Varsity 8+ and Junior Varsity 8+ finished first and second in the Open 8+ race beating out crews from Lewis & Clark, Oregon, Portland State and Pacific Lutheran.
OSU had eight crews participate in three different race groups - the Open 8+, the Open 4+ and the Collegiate 4+ - with most of the rowers racing more than once.
The two 4+ boats entered in the Open 4+ division for the Beavers also finished first and second respectively.
The Portland Fall Classic, which was held along the east bank of the Willamette River from the east side of the Ross Island Bridge to just north of the Burnside Bridge. The 5,000-meter head race featured crews starting at 20-second intervals and racing against the clock.
"The team rowed really strong in the eights," Todd said. "Overall we accomplished what we set out to do. We gained a lot of good experience today and learned a lot. It was good to have a chance to go over the race course twice and make some adjustments between the two races and really get a good feel for the race."
The Beavers are back in action next Sunday at the Head of the Lake hosted by the University of Washington.
