SPOKANE, Wash. - The Oregon State men's rowing team faced challenging early spring conditions, battling cold and windy weather and came away with four wins at Gonzaga.
"It was important today to get a good showing from all the crews," head coach Steve Todd said. "We were hoping to set a good tone for entering our spring break training week, and I think that we got the most we could out of the races."
The Varsity 8 raced well from start to finish getting off to a clean, strong start and steadily made progress moving away from the Bulldogs throughout the 2,000-meter course finishing in 6-minutes, 38-seconds, a full 10 seconds ahead.
"The Varsity had some distractions to deal with immediately before the race with an equipment problem, but they stayed focused and rowed their race and really put out a great effort."
The Junior Varsity 8 attacked with an aggressive pace from the start establishing an open water lead by the 500-meter mark and continued to move away through the while piece. OSU finished in 6:58, 16 seconds ahead of the Zags.
"The JV's goal was to stick to their race plan despite the conditions and they executed well. It's a lot of young guys in that boat and they handled the conditions and the race with a lot of maturity."
Oregon State's Freshman 8 earned a five second win finishing the course in 6:55 and the Second Freshman 8 dominated its race winning by nearly a full minute. OSU's Varsity 4+ came up short finishing in 8:08.
