CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's winning streak ended at eight games as California-Riverside beat the Beavers 3-2 in non-conference baseball Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. Jacoby Ellsbury had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 13 games over two seasons for OSU (9-2 overall).
The Beavers and Highlanders (8-8) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude it Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's game can be heard on www.osubeavers.com
On Friday, Oregon State took its only lead of the day at 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning, only to see UCR score single runs in the top of the eighth and ninth innings. The Beavers outhit the Highlanders 8-7 but left seven runners on base, including four in scoring position.
"We had guys in scoring position and opportunities to create some momentum, and we just didn't get it done at the plate," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "We just keep asking our pitchers to go out and put zeroes on the board, but eventually you're going to give up a run and we did. We created our own problems. We gave up a run in the first that we never should have given up, and we just didn't take care of business and swing the bat with guys in scoring position. It cost us a ballgame on the offensive side of the ball. Our pitching was plenty good."
The run in the first inning that Casey alluded to was an unearned tally, as Dallas Buck, Nate Fogle and Kevin Gunderson combined to allow only two earned runs and OSU lowered its team earned run average to 2.16.
OSU finally got even in the bottom of the fourth when Mitch Canham singled through the right side with one out, was balked to second and scored on a double to centerfield by Shea McFeely. UCR righthander James Simmons fanned the next two hitters to end the inning and keep the score 1-1.
The Beavers had a chance to go in front in the bottom of the fifth when they put runners at the corners with one out and then had runners at second and third with two out, but Simmons again came up with a pair of strikeouts to end the inning. OSU did go in front 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh when catcher Billy Munich lofted a home run to rightfield to lead off the inning; it was Munich's first homer since April, 2003.
UCR tied the game against Fogle in the top of the eight on a groundball and a chopper that went for singles, a stolen base and a run-scoring groundout by Brian Steinmeyer. The Highlanders took the lead against Gunderson after Brett Bigler doubled to leftfield with one out, stole third and scored on Andrew Martinez's sacrifice fly.
Buck went 6 2/3 innings, allowing the one unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out nine. Gunderson suffered his first loss of the season after posting two wins and three saves.
OSU threatened in the bottom of the ninth as McFeely reached on an error to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Darwin Barney. UCR brought Anthony Claggett in from shortstop to pitch and the righthander walked pinch-hitter Chris Campos, then pinch-hitter Geoff Wagner grounded a full-count pitch into a game-ending double play.
Ellsbury's 2-for-4 day raised his batting average to .478, and he also had his seventh stolen base of the season. For UCR, Matt Cunningham was 2-for-3, Aaron Grant 2-for-4 and Bigler 2-for-5; Simmons walked none and struck out four in 8 1/3 innings to improve to 2-1 this season and Claggett earned his third save.
