CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State completed a two-game series sweep of Brigham Young in non-conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field, completing a 12-5 win that had been suspended due to rain Monday night and then taking an 11-6 victory in the finale. Scott Nelson's pinch-hit grand slam punctuated the win in the opener, then freshmen boosted the Beavers (21-4 overall) in the second game as Daniel Turpen pitched his first collegiate win, Lonnie Lechelt homered and Darwin Barney was 3-for-5 with a double and three runs batted in.
Oregon State, ranked No. 27 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll and No. 18 by Baseball America magazine this week, now begins Pacific-10 play by hosting California this weekend. The series includes games Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field and all three can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com.
Against BYU (17-7-1), the Beavers picked up a pair of foul-weather wins over a team that came into the series with a six-game winning streak and 14 wins in its last 15 games. The teams played through damp conditions Monday evening, but heavy overnight rains gave way to occasional showers and there were no delays Tuesday.
"With it raining and muddy and dirty, and up and down and all that kind of stuff, we were happy we were able to get two wins out of it," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "That's a club that's going to probably win their conference and play in a regional and probably have 35 wins. They came in here 17-5-1 and we talked to some people who said they were a very good club, and they are."
The Beavers had taken a 5-1 lead in the middle of the fifth inning when the series-opener was suspended on Monday night. Oregon State bumped its lead to 10-1 with a five-run sixth inning that included Nelson's grand slam; it was the first pinch-hit homer for OSU since Andy Jenkins accomplished it against Washington on May 2, 2004.
Sophomore righthander Jonah Nickerson improved to 5-0 with the win after pitching the five innings played Monday night. Nickerson allowed one unearned run on five hits and no walks while striking out eight and lowering his earned run average to 0.90 this season.
BYU did get back within 10-5 with a four-run eighth inning. That ended the Beaver pitching staff's run of innings without allowing an earned run at 26 1/3 in a row.
Barney was 2-for-4 and Jenkins was 2-for-6 with a double for the Beavers in the first game of the series.
In the finale, Brigham Young took its first lead of the series when Sean McNaughton led off with a homer against Turpen, a righthander making his second start and just his third appearance of the season. The Cougars then loaded the bases with a hit, a walk and a two-out error but Turpen fanned Brandon Relf to end the inning with the score still 1-0.
OSU's Jacoby Ellsbury then gave the 263 diehards the chance to witness a rarity - a game in which both teams led off the game with a home run. Ellsbury hit his team-high fourth of the season to right-center to tie the score, and Oregon State led 3-1 after one inning as Barney and Joey Ledesma added two-out, run-scoring singles.
"I gained some confidence after working out of that bases-loaded jam - especially after not having thrown very much," Turpen said. "I felt really good ... I hadn't really been comfortable yet, but when I worked out of that I got comfortable in the second and got in a groove in the third and fourth. It felt good.
"Jacoby came back and matched their leadoff hitter, and we came back and scored a bunch of runs today. We swung the bats really well."
The Beavers rapped 16 hits in the second game, with Shea McFeely going 3-for-4 and driving in a pair of runs, Ellsbury going 3-for-6 and driving in two runs, Ledesma going 2-for-3 and driving in two runs, and Jenkins going 2-for-6 with a double.
Lechelt, making his third start of the season, put OSU in front 9-2 with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning. It was his second career hit - with both being homers that have come within the last week - and he also turned in some tough defensive plays at second base.
"I got the start at second base and I'm just trying to make the most of my opportunities when I get them," Lechelt said. "I just try to play well and that it comes out the way I hope it to."
Brigham Young again put together an eighth-inning rally, getting within 11-6 with four runs in the frame on three hits, and the Cougars left a pair of runners on base.
The Beavers' start is their best through 25 games since 1962, when Oregon State opened the season 23-2 en route to an eventual NCAA postseason berth and a No. 13 ranking in the final Collegiate Baseball poll that year.
