An eight-run fifth inning keyed Oregon State to a 12-6 win over ninth-ranked Arizona State on Sunday afternoon in the Bill Schaefer Memorial Baseball Tournament at Packard Stadium. OSU (3-1 overall) had 15 hits - including seven for extra bases - and Kevin Gunderson pitched 6 1/3 innings of one-run relief for the Beavers.
OSU returns to the Phoenix area next weekend for the Oakland Athletics Tournament, meeting Missouri on Friday, Kansas State on Saturday and Northwestern and Missouri on Sunday.
Against Arizona State (3-3), the Beavers beat the Sun Devils on their home field for the first time since 2000. The tourney game does not count in the Pacific-10 standings. OSU trailed 5-2 after three innings before coming back for the win.
"We were hoping to get a little further into the game before we went into our bullpen," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "They scored a couple of runs and we felt it was time to go to Gundy (Gunderson), and he had some short innings because he was so sharp, and we were able to stay with him."
Gunderson allowed one run on three hits and no walks in his career-high 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight.
"Watching him front centerfield, you could see him keep everybody off-balance," OSU centerfielder Jacoby Ellsbury said of the sophomore lefthander. "They didn't know what was coming, they didn't know what to expect. Hats off to Kevin; he did a tremendous job."
Said OSU head coach Pat Casey: "To come down here and go 3-1 out of the gate and play some quality clubs, and to open on the road against Arizona State (on the first weekend of the season), you'll take that any time you can. We played great defense the whole time down here - we really played well. And we swung the bat well."
The Beavers committed two errors in the tournament, and OSU scored in double digits in all three of its wins.
"It's exciting to know we can play with a top-10 team like this," Ellsbury said. "It's a big boost for our team."
OSU's comeback began in the top of the fourth, when rightfielder Danny Anderson's homer to rightfield got the Beavers within 5-3.
"It was big," Casey said of the senior transfer from San Jose State. "He made a good swing and hit the ball out, and I thought that lifted us."
In the fifth, the Beavers went in front for good against ASU lefthander Brett Bordes and reliever Tony Barnette. With one out, OSU got four straight doubles from Ellsbury, Mike Lissman, Andy Jenkins and Shea McFeely to make it 6-5; Chris Kunda added a two-run single, Darwin Barney a run-scoring double and Ellsbury a two-run single to give OSU an 11-5 advantage.
"We made some little adjustments at the plate and they paid off," Ellsbury said. "It's great to know we can score against lefthanded pitching, righthanded pitching - we had a lot of guys hit, and our pitching was excellent."
The Beavers had gone in front 2-0 with a pair of unearned runs in the second inning, only to see ASU respond with four runs in the bottom of the second off starter Anton Maxwell and then another run in the third before Gunderson came into the game.
