Oregon State pitcher Jonah Nickerson struck out eight in three innings of work as the Beavers beat New Mexico State 11-2 Saturday night in the Bob Schaefer Memorial Baseball Tournament at Packard Stadium. Mike Lissman tied a school record with three doubles in the game for OSU (2-1 overall).

Against New Mexico State (0-3), Nickerson and three relievers combined to strike out 15 Aggies in a four-hitter. Reined in by a low pitch count after resting his arm much of the late fall and winter, Nickerson needed just 35 pitches to get through his three innings of work, allowing only a bad-hop single and a popout among the eight strikeouts.
"My arm felt pretty good out there," Nickerson said. "I was just trying to get ahead of the hitters and establish my fastball early in the game. It was good just to go in there, get my work done and shut it down."
The Beavers handed Nickerson a 2-0 lead before he ever went to the mound in the bottom of the first inning as Lissman and Chris Campos delivered back-to-back run-scoring doubles off NMSU starter Brian Boyer.
"That made me feel pretty good, to have the two-run led before I ever went out there," Nickerson said.
Lissman finished 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, and his three doubles matched a school record that has been accomplished many times, most recently by Aaron Mathews against The Citadel in 2004. OSU finished with 14 hits, including a 4-for-6 night with a home run by first baseman Mitch Canham and a pair of run-scoring doubles by Chris Campos.
Campos also pitched three innings, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks while striking out five. Kevin Joslyn pitched two innings of scoreless two-hit ball and Eddie Kunz capped the game with a scoreless inning.
