CORVALLIS, Ore. - No. 15 ranked Oregon State dropped a 2-0 contest to in-state rival No. 14 ranked University of Oregon in Friday's Pacific-10 Conference softball action.
Oregon State falls to 33-12 on the season and 1-4 in the Pac-10, while Oregon ups its record to 30-9 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
A leadoff walk proved costly for the Beavers as the Ducks took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jen Poore came around to score when Beth Boskovich hit a two-out single up the middle that bounced off second base.
Oregon added the only other run of the contest in the second inning, when Suzie Barnes belted an RBI double to deep center field that plated Dani Baird.
"It was a tough game," said OSU head coach Kirk Walker. "They were able to capitalize in the first and second inning and that was the difference."
OSU managed just one hit in the contest - a fourth inning single up the middle by Vanessa Iapala.
Beaver senior hurler Monica Hoffman (17-8) struck out seven batters, while Oregon pitcher Ani Nyhus (15-5) fanned eight.
"Monica finished the game throwing strong and had the momentum in the last few innings," said Walker. "Unfortunately they picked up two runs early."
The loss broke a seven-game winning streak for the Beavers at the OSU Softball Complex.
The Beavers and Ducks wrap-up the season series on Saturday at 2 p.m.
