CORVALLIS, Ore. - Once again, the No. 10 Oregon State gymnastics team found itself in a tight race at the NCAA Regional Championships, but in the end it was No. 15 Oklahoma and No. 3 Alabama advancing to the NCAA Championships.
Oklahoma won the West Regional meet with a 197.100, and the Crimson Tide edged the Beavers by .050 to earn the second spot to the April 15-17 NCAA Championships. Alabama finished with a 196.900, while OSU ended up with a 196.850. Boise State placed fourth at 195.275, followed by California (195.175) and Cal State Fullerton (193.000).
It was the second year in a row the Beavers narrowly missed out on the trip to nationals, after having been edged by .025 in the South Central Regional a year ago.
"It's hard to lose by five-hundredths of a point," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "Overall this team has fought really hard all year. I couldn't be more proud."
Although the Beavers won't advance as a team, they'll be represented at the NCAA Championships by senior All-American Tanya Ricioli-Hebron, who earned one of two individual all-around berths. The top two all-arounders whose teams don't advance also qualify for nationals, and Ricioli-Hebron placed third overall with a 39.500. Boise State's Lindsay Ward, who was seventh overall with a 39.350, is the other individual all-arounder to advance out of the West Region. Alabama's Jeana Rice won the all-around title after finishing with a 39.550.
"It was a really emotional night. I wanted to celebrate my last meet here," said Ricioli-Hebron. "It's great to go as an individual, but I would give it all up to go with the team."
Ricioli-Hebron also won the beam title by tying her career-high of 9.95. Rice tied teammate Shannon Hrozek and Oklahoma's Kasie Tamayo with 9.90 marks to win bars, and Alabama's Ashley Miles won the floor title with a 9.95. Miles also tied Oklahoma's Ashley Cooney for first place on vault with a 9.95.
In addition to Ricioli-Hebron's win on beam, the Beavers had several other top seven finishes. Anglea Morales and Th?r?se Videan had career-highs of 9.925 on vault to tie for third, and Chrissy Lamun tied for third on beam with a 9.90. Lamun also tied for fifth on bars with a 9.85, and Morales tied for seventh with a 9.875 on beam.
