The two freshmen dynamos pitched for wins on Saturday afternoon as the Beavers (11-4) closed out day two of the UNLV Classic. Ta'Tyana McElroy improved her record to 4-0 on the season with the 8-4 win over Cal Poly, while Brianne McGowan earned her second straight victory after shutting out UC Riverside 9-0.
"We had two big wins today, and the freshman pitching was great," OSU head coach Kirk Walker said. "Ty had a one hitter through five innings and Brianne earned the shutout. They both had two solid outings."
Senior hurler Monica Hoffman earned her ninth save of her career against Cal Poly, which ties her with all-time leader Amy Warner (1994-97).
Against Cal Poly, freshman third baseman Sherina Galvan went 2-for-3, with both her hits being fence-clearers. She boasted six RBI, leading all players.
"Sherina had a big day," Walker said. "Both of her home runs were big ones to take the game away from Cal Poly, and they were the first of her career."
Freshman left fielder Mia Longfellow had a 3-for-5 effort from the plate, boasting a double with an RBI, while sophomore right fielder Adrienne Alo saw five looks at the plate, getting two hits and also scoring one run.
The Beavers took an early five run lead over the Mustangs (4-6) through five. The Mustangs retaliated with a four run effort of their own in the bottom of the sixth, but the Beavers put three across in the seventh to put the game away.
The Beavers came out strong against UC Riverside, scoring one run in the first inning before adding eight more in the bottom of the third.
Alo and sophomore catcher Vanessa Iapala both had perfect marks from the plate - Alo with three hits and Iapala with two. Alo scored two runs and put three across; Iapala had one run and one RBI.
"I was very pleased with our offense, it felt great," Walker said. "We swung our bats. Alo and Iapala both hit very well all day."
Galvan was able to put two more runs across the plate against the Highlanders, landing her at eight RBI on the day. Prior to Saturday, Galvan had one RBI. She is now behind Iapala (14) and junior shortstop Kelly Petersen (9) on the season.
McGowan went 1-for-3, also notching an RBI; she went a perfect 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter against the Mustangs; while sophomore second baseman Alana Mendoza went 1-for-1 against the Highlanders.
The Beavers return to action at 10 a.m. against the No. 8 Cornhuskers of Nebraska.
"We have a lot of big momentum," Walker said. "We need to take it over to Sunday and play tough against a top 20 team."
