No. 11 Softball Wins Worth Tourney Opener 5-4 Against No. 12 Pacific

The No. 11 Oregon State softball team defeated No. 12 Pacific 5-4 Friday afternoon in OSU's first game at the CS-Fullerton Worth Tournament.
OSU (17-4) put three runs on the board in the fifth to make it 5-2, and then shut down a Pacific rally in the seventh, holding the Tigers to two runs.
Freshman shortstop Kelly Petersen extended her hitting streak to 10 games with a 2-for-3 performance that included a two RBI and a double.
Junior Shelly Prochaska drove in two runs, while freshman Alana Mendoza had her best day from the plate with a 3-for-3 performance with two runs scored.
Brynnen Guthrie and Jessica King also batted well, Guthrie went 1-for-3 with a RBI and King was 2-for-3.
OSU sophomore Monica Hoffman pitched a complete game for the win, improving her record to 4-1 on the year.
"This was a very good game," OSU coach Kirk Walker said. "It was a hard-fought game with two top-20 programs.
"Monica pitched a great game, barring a few mistakes, she did a great job. Our defense made a couple mistakes, but stayed strong and did a good job with runners in scoring position.
"This was a big win for us. It was nice to play hard and play well in the opening game of the weekend."
The Beavers are now 4-2 against top-25 schools this year.
